I took my 2yo to the docs yesterday with sores around his mouth and he was diagnosed with impetigo and has been prescribed antibiotic cream. Today it seems even worse and has spread to round his nose and hands.

Has anyone else's dc had this? Did u find the cream worked? Did it get worse before it got better? It looks so sore :(

It is very contagious....and also very common. Make sure you use different everything to your ds. With regards the cream; I'm not sure. Someone will come along and clarify.
It's no help, but it's very common in children but beware, you can catch it too! I speak from experience.

I would return to drs monday as may need oral ABs. It should be getting better not worse. my dd kept getting it it would disapear and return within a week and she was prescribed oral ABs and it has not returned since.

Thanks both. Think I'm going to go to the drop in today actually as he's got pimples all over his legs, arms and nappy area now too!

My DC3 just had this, the sores , followed by being covered in tiny red spots. The cream didn't help, but after 48 hours of oral ABs the spots had gone and the sores were healing really well.

Did you go to the drop in? How did you get on?

sunnysunnyshine · 19/05/2012 20:35

Well the doc refused to prescribe oral antibiotics as he said they don't always work any better and can build resistance!?!

He said ds has hand, foot and mouth as well the poor thing. But that will clear up in about 48 hrs by itself apparantly. He also suggested using diluted savlon on the sores instead of the cream. So far it's more successful in that it doesn't sting him so he doesnt wipe it off at least.

I'll see how he gets on. He's off his food and so grumpy so must be feeling crap. I didn't think h f & m or impetigo made them feel unwell, or do they? I'm worried he's got something else but I have to trust the docs I guess.

I would take him to your doc on monday if he is no better, it may be that he is run down if he has both and so his imune system may be fighting and make him feel unwell.
