How long until antibiotics kick in?

Dd has throat infection and the cough is horrible and makes her sick. We started antibiotics on Mon (it's 4 doses a day but we only started mid morning on Mon so she had three that day). Is still bad though. When should they kick in?

With ds (ear infections) I used to reckon 24 hours before I saw any improvement, 48 hours before much better-and about 60 hours before the tummy pains he got from the antibiotics.

When dd1 had pneumonia she showed no improvement in 48 hours so they added another antibiotic. She actually was worse when the antibiotics kicked in initially though because she started coughing as her chest loosened.

I would have expected her to show some improvement by now, but you might not be able to tell just by the cough. If you find getting appointments with the doctor difficult, then I'd think it was reasonable to get one to check up today. If your doctor is easy to see, then I'd probably wait until tomorrow, but not leave it over the weekend with no sign of improvement.

Often there is a marked improvement after 24 hours, but depending on the level of infection and the type of anti-biotics it could be up to 72 hours before you see a clear improvement.

Hope she gets better soon and if you are concerned I would take her back as it could be that she needs a different type of anti-biotics or it is viral. What anti-biotics has she been given?

Usually within 24 hours I see an improvement, then it levels off until about day 4 I think. However, coughs always linger and dd still had a crackle and resident chest infection 4 days into her last chest inf but it was gone by day 6 (all checked by doc). When ds had pneumonia and when he's had bad ear inf they seem to kick in vvvv quick but I suspect that's cos he was so bad that anything was an improvement iyswim?

How's her temp? Is she eating and drinking? Is she playing? How's her breathing?

I seem to remember she's a bit younger than my dd and tbh, if you're not sure I'd get her checked over again tomorrow.

Thank you all. There was no improvement on penicillin after three days, in fact it got worse, but we got doc appt yesterday and she changed antibiotics and def improvement already after four doses.
