Allergy to penicillin?

Six weeks ago my son badly cut his finger, went to hospital, was sewn up and had penicillin for five days. All was fine, no reaction. Penicillin was a thick cleanish white liquid.

He now has tonsillitis. Got a prescription for a five day course of penicillin. It was thin, orange flavoured and very acidic. Two days after starting, he has developed a rash, head-to-toe.

GP is full this afternoon, so waiting for telephone consultation. Have given piriton to relieve the rash.

Would a reaction be instant or delayed?

Have you experienced this?

Ds had penicillin when he was 5 months for an ear infection, was fine. He had it again at a year old for a chest infection and got a blistered rash after about 3 days on it. He now can't have an penicillin. He also gets severe tummy pains and sickness with erythrymycin but that's more an intolerance than an allergy.

I'm allergic to penicillin, and my mum says that I'd had it several times before I had a reaction, in the form of a rash (the day we left on holiday) so sounds possible

Eldest DC was unfortunate to have 4 ear infections in a year that required treatment, around age 2.5. It was only after the last course of penicillin that he reacted, ( blotchy all over rash and swollen, puffy face.)

GP advised us that intolerance is not always immediate and drugs can have a cumulative affect. DS is 18 now and still can't have penicillin but seems fine with other anti-biotics.

Hope you get to the bottom of it Smile
