Hi all. I was wondering if anyone can help me with something. My son who is 5 is struggling to pronounce 'S' properly. He has a wide vocabulary and has no trouble with any other sound. However its not like he can't say it, more like he sounds almost congested and he pronounces the sound through his nose! Difficult to explain! Almost like when adults have a cold - its like he has fluid in his throat/nose.

We have been referred to a speech thrapist but I feel it may me more and ear nose and throat thing as its not like he has trouble doing it, more like his body is stopping him!

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their child?

Hi op

My dd has this. She has speech issues so I asked to be referred to SALT and she was given a hearing test which showed some issues Shock I had no idea. They referred to ENT and believe grommets are going to be recommended. Due to something else dd ended up at tge hospital allergy clinic, the consultant immediately suggested rhinitis and she is now on medication. There has been some immediate improvement in many ways. Her sleeping patterns, she is more rested, her speech has already improved some, although I'm not certain her hearing has improved.

The SALT was happy to wait for tge outcome of tge ENT appt and says with what ive told her and what she managed to observe it totally fits in with her speech being affected by hearing issues as well as congestion ie tge sounds were the nose is used.

Thank you so much, this does help. His hearing tests have come back fine and I am thinking rhinitus could be the cause - he often wants to blow his nose in the middle of the night even when he doesn't have a cold so I will look into this and hope to get him referred to an ENT specialist!

Thank you! :-)
