A very high temperature with no other symptoms

Ds has had very high temperature for 4 days now. Up to 40C. Am managing to get it down a bit with Calpol and/or Nurofen. But aside from feeling very hot and rather wishywashy, and alternating between looking deathly pale and flushed, he has no other symptoms. No cold symptoms, no sickness or diarrhoea, nothing. Took him to GP yesterday who checked his throat and listened to his chest and asked loads of questions. But really stumped. Suggested to continue with drugs, fluids and rest and to return if he gets worse or still high temp after weekend.
Surely you don't get that sort of temperature with no underlying reason. Do you?
Ds is 9 BTW and generally fit and healthy.

Get a urine sample and take it to the GP tomorrow. Insist on an urgent appointment. It could be a urine infection and they need to be treated with antibiotics. They don't go of their own accord.

Dd2 had something similar two weeks ago. I was told it was a virus and would go away and it did on about day 6. Smile

Could he have a urine infection without any pain or cystitis type symptoms?

That's encouraging K9999 Smile

DS2 has had a mystery virus this week, high temp and pale or flushing and generally feeling very tired and sorry for himself but no other symptoms. It went away after about four days so I would give it the weekend and take him back on Monday if no improvement.

DD has had similar this week (although she's only 19 months) and apart from at 3 days she developed a beaut of a viral rash, she's just been desperately fevery and floppy, but nothing specific otherwise. It started to go on day 5 and today (day 6) the fever's completely gone but she's now got tonsillitis so has some antibiotics to take. Whatever it was was really horrible, but just a virus initially.

My son (also 9) had this at the start of March - he did have a runny nose too but no cough, nothing wrong with his appetite, only really feeling ill when his temp went all the way up... Got very achey legs in the last couple of days before it went away (lasted about a week)

Thanks all, that's reassuring. Really hope he gets better over the weekend and can return to school on Monday.

How is he today?

moosemama · 21/04/2012 15:56

Dd (3) had a similar thing at the start of the Easter break, temps up to 40, coming down to about 38 at the lowest with calpol or calprofen, looked pale with dark circles under her eyes and then flushed when temp was at it's highest and was perhaps less active than usual, but no other symptoms at all and happy enough in herself - as in not obviously suffering at all.

We were just a the point of taking her to the GP and it was over as suddenly as it started.

That said, urine infection was what I suspected with dd and would definitely have taken a sample into the GP if the fever hadn't broken on the fourth night and stayed down on day 5, so if he's no better today, perhaps a trip to the walk-in centre of OOH GP with a sample?

Thanks for asking today! He is sooooo much better. Temperature a little higher than normal but practically hypothermic compared to previous few days Grin
Had a short trip out for some fresh air and he hasn't flagged at all.
Hopefully tomorrow will see further improvement and back to school on Monday all being well.

We had this too in our 4 year old - boiling and listless for 5 days then right as rain.
