DD bum is red raw. Skin peeling. Possibly due to teething.

Kamillisan is usual first cream then metanium oitment.

Neither has helped. She's not screaming with it but can't be pleasant.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Try mixing metanium with Vaseline 50-50. Works better than either separately as Vaseline forms a better barrier and metanium heals the rash.

MrsLettuce · 19/04/2012 20:54

My pediatrician advised corn starch (aka corn flour) for broken skin with nappy rash. Dab it on and then apply metanium, works where all else fails.

MrsLettuce · 19/04/2012 20:56

The problem with broken skin is that it's not possible to put a barrier over it with cream, the moisture makes it float off IYSWIM. The corn starch drys and protects it and allows the cream to form a barrier.

lagoonhaze · 19/04/2012 20:58

Thank you for all the suggestions. How would I use cornflour. It's just in the packet in my store cupboard- no idea!

Conotrane - it's more commonly used for bed sores - but really is a miracle cream. here

RandomMess · 19/04/2012 20:58

Sprilon Spray (that is the brand name) available over the counter at a pharmacy, very pricey about £7 per tin. It is breathable spray on stuff for bed sores - it worked when all else had failed and was given it on pescription.

RandomMess · 19/04/2012 21:00

X-posts it's very similar ingrediants to conotrane but as you spray it on (very thinly indeed) it means you don't have them screaming and wincing whilst you apply the stuff!

festi · 19/04/2012 21:00

I would go to gp she may need fucidin or thrush cream if the skin is broken.

MrsLettuce · 19/04/2012 21:05

Yup, the stuff in the store cupboard.

Just dab it on gently with cotton wool, it'll stick where it's needed. It's best to do the whole nappy area, there can often be pinprick breaking that isn't visible until the corn starch sticks to it. Then, dab the metanium on like you would an eye cream (rather than smearing it out).

But yeah, it's usually quite a lot better after a couple of treatments.

If there's no improvement in 24 - 48 hours it'd be best to see the GP to rule out thrush.

Some fantastic ideas on here!

Already planning on getting an appt tomorrow - hopefully GP will either see us or do a script after phone consul. My surgery is very very good.

I vaguely remember brushed on egg White being mentioned somewhere as a solution?

OP posts:
MrsLettuce · 19/04/2012 21:08

I never dared try the egg white thing - it's an old MN favourite - but there's a (theoretical?) risk of salmonella infection...

lagoonhaze · 19/04/2012 21:08

Sorry mrslettuce for sounding silly but do I mix it with water then dap on?

OP posts:
lagoonhaze · 19/04/2012 21:09

Ah that would rule egg White out for me then. I'm so risk adverse!

MrsLettuce · 19/04/2012 21:09

You need to put it on dry, in powder form. Sorry I wasn't clear!

nancerama · 19/04/2012 21:12

My GP prescribed timodene - it was magic stuff and healed poor DS in less than a day.

Whilst waiting for the GP appointment, good old Savlon seemed to cool and sooth.

Duritzfan · 19/04/2012 21:14

Timodene, Canesten or talc with zinc in it if you can find it
Hope its better soon Smile

cheekyginger · 19/04/2012 22:01

I just sprinkle on the cornflour like talcum powder when needed.

Just be careful that its not thrush (the edge of the rash tends to have defined red spots) as the cornflour with make it worse!!! (speaking from experience, my poor wee DS)

mathanxiety · 19/04/2012 22:04

She may have something that needs a prescription. This happened to DS and I tried a lot of ointments before deciding to take him to be seen poor thing.

lagoonhaze · 20/04/2012 07:04

Poor DD have done the Vaseline/metanium mix this morning. She was flinching. Going to get an appt today. Actually want her seen.

When this is all settled any miracle barrier creams - we're using kamillisan at moment.

Try Paladin, it's so good. It's a product from America but you can order it from comfyskin.com. Try it. I called it a miracle cream!

theDudesmummy · 20/04/2012 10:16

Please please, please use Antipeol. It works within hours and never fails. It is truly magic. Just try it, you will never see a lasting nappy rash (or any rash) again. No, I don't have shares in the company that makes it, I just know from experience that it is miraculous. From red raw and bleeding to completely clear skin within hours.

Not readily available in high stret chemists but can easily buy it online. eg here

A&D ointment is what you need. It smells a bit like fish oil but it is fantastic. American product afaik. I used it in the US for all of mine, and DS was the only one who ever had a problem, when we were abroad and I had forgotten to pack it.

Different sizes available.
