How critical is the empty stomach for antibiotics?

DD3 has been given antibiotics, which state they have to be taken on an empty stomach: 1 hour before food or 2 hours after food. She is 2, so her day is about 13 hours long (awake around 7, asleep around 8 - and she has a bit of a nap after lunch). We are not routiney so there aren't set times when there must be lunch but I am struggling to fit in 4 doses of medicine, each on an empty stomach. Any thoughts?

No advice but I had no idea they had to be taken on an empty stomach Blush it had never done me or my ds any harm

As i understand it the antibiotics are better absorbed on an empty stomach and your DD may not get the intended full dose if taken with food. you could try taking the first dose at 7am the next at 11am before lunch ( don't worry if she's had a snack) the next dose at 3pm before tea and the last dose at 8ish or bedtime making sure its 2hr since her tea. leaving at least 4hrs between doses is fine. but having said all that it is better she gets some of the dose than none at all so always give even if it means giving it with food. hope that makes sense!

Yup, it's all to do with how well they get absorbed but when it comes to toddlers I think if you get them in at all you are doing well so I wouldn't worry too much. Smile

Hope she gets better soon.

Thanks. I managed to get her to take a spoonful this afternoon by means of her Easter chocolate :) First time she has ever taken anything. She is desperate to go to bed now so I have to give her e next one even though it is only 45 minutes since she ate :(
