Toenail falling off

Hi my DD bashed her foot on a solid door a few weeks back...she was ok but hurt her toe. I suspected this would happen but not sure what to do;
The nail is almost ready to fall off, it's only attached at the bottom.

So what do I do? I'm guessing leave it til it falls off but then what? Is there anything I should look out for? Is it worth taking her out of school to see the dr or just let the school nurse look?
Thanks

Oh and she's not in any pain and it doesn't hurt her or look infected

if its not hurting her or bothering her i would just leave it OR if you are brave and you dont think it would hurt her quickly pull it off? actually give her a good long soak in the bath adn then it will probably just come off on its own?

two of my boys have done this and each tiem they have gone to bed one night with the nail hanging off and then in hte morning it has been gone! we never found the nail [boak] and they grew back fine which your dd's should do as long as she hasnt damaged the nail bed :)

Yes I suspected this. In fact i noticed how much it was falling off after she got out of the bath.

How will I know if the nail bed is damaged? Will it be obvious? Her nail and toe look fine (no bruising, dark patches etc)

if it looks fine it probably is, but it will just be a case of wait and see there is nothing you can actually do to fix it, if the nail bed is dry you could put some moisturiser on it.

i thought ds4's nail wouldnt grow back as his nail bed DID look damaged, very sore and inflamed, bruiesed etc, but it grew back fine, a bit of a bumpy toe nail for a while but now you cant tell he did it :)

Oh ok thanks 5.

Will keep my eye on it

And hopefully not lose the nail somewhere [boak]

dds toenail fell off after she picked the skin around it and it lifted off the bed. Boak and

I just put a not too tight plaster over the toe nail to prevent it getting knocked while it fell off, then a new one grew

Boak boak boak and ,thud.

5madthings · 15/04/2012 21:10

ooh joyce that must have been rank [boak] and yes a plaster to stop it catching is a good idea :)

JoyceDivision · 15/04/2012 21:25

yes, i hate toenail related ailments. my mum had her large toenails removed BUT STILL PAINTS NAIL VARNISH ON THE TOE ON THE SKIN BLLEEUUURRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5madthings · 15/04/2012 21:27

eww thats like my sil she has had her two big toe nails removed and still paints the nail bed, it looks RANK!!!

i dont like toe nail injuries and am a crap mummy as when ds1 was little I dropped a chair on his toe which ripped the nail off :( tbf he didnt seem to care but oh it looked so sore especially as he was crawling so it was getting scrapped on the floor as he crawled around :(

he is now 12 and appears not to have suffered any long lasting trauma tho! Grin

Bogoffubastard · 15/04/2012 21:44

Haha 5 I just realised I know two nurses and I came to MN first! Grin
