Gastroenteritis / viral thingy

Hi, My six yr old son has been unwell since Sunday (tis now Thurs). Started with feeling poorly, then vomiting over night, perked up a bit, then started with a headache, diarrhea, feeling sore in his neck. Went to A&E where they diagnosed viral bug with tonsillitis. Got worse, failing to get better, saw Doctor who said 'tummy bug' and heart murmur (which is a new, slightly terrifying one to me), then he started to be sick again so he was admitted overnight at hospital on a drip. Left hospital yesterday, now drinking and has nibbled at a couple of things, but he is just lying on the sofa - not wanting to do anything. No sickness or diarrhea since hospital, but I have never seen wither of my kids like this before. He is just lying there watching TV, doesn't want to do anything or even talk. Doctor at hospital said it could take days, but you know when you just worry?? Hospital couldn't find evidence of heart murmur but said it was not unusual in a poorly child. Any words of wisdom out there??

Ds2 has a very similar bug. He started it on Sunday. He was having to have 5ml of water every 15 mins and at one point puked that up too. He had a temperature too. He hasn't eaten normal food yet as he had the runs after eating plain chicken and potatoes on wednesday. He has been really ill and is looking very skinny. He is weak and dizzy. I think it is like gastroenteritis. I do the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, apples toast. Although he had a rich tea biscuit as he needs encouragement to eat as he is not really interested.

Sorry to hear your little one is poorly too - have you been to the docs or hospital? Had any advice?? I don't normally worry about sickness bugs, but this one has left him - well - horizontal for five days now! He has started to eat a little today, but he was sick first thing when he woke up, which I wasn't expecting.

Sorry to hear he is so poorly. We have had this for the past week. Both DD and DS started it Sunday night/monday morning, but DD has had bouts of sickness on and off all week. Neither had diarrhoea though.

I phoned the GP who told me that this particular bug which is doing the rounds is lasting 7-10 days. She said to stay off dairy, and make sure they got a decent amount of sugar and salt to replace those that they are losing - she said the best things for this were Hula Hoops and flat lemonade! lol!

DD hasn't been sick since 4am yesterday and it was only yesterday that DS got his appetite back (well, probably about 80% back to normal). Great Easter hols hey???!
