My dd aged 3 has had earache on and off for a week, i had her to the drs 4/5 days last week with her chest, which is a virus and it appears asthma has been mentioned sort of. the ear pain is intermittent but very distressing and have had many sleepless nights, apparently no infection or redness but i am at a loss of what to do, at point where my mum is saying i am not doing enough, have got calpol, ibruprofen, nasal spay, vapour rub, any suggestions will be much appreciated.

It could be pressure in her ear. Try a hot water bottle (not too hot obv) on her ear.

Also, ignore your mum.

Hi. Sounds horrible. It is probably an ear infection. My ds had this and I didn't even realise what was up until it sort of exploded in the night leaving loads of goo on his pillow. I think it was an ear drum infection. Calpol is just about the only thing you can do. Keep going to the docs though if it doesn't go away.

GPs won't give antibiotics for ear infections and it can be extremely painful.

With ds I have to give both Calpol and Nurofen together when it is really painful. He can be screaming in pain Sad

Try the hot water bottle but not too hot! Even better, one of those soft toys that can be microwaved.

I had my DS to the docs three times in the last couple of weeks becasue of an ear infection. I suspected ear infection all along but docs on first two visits said ears were both fine. On the third visit one ear drum was 'very red and bulging'. By that point DS couldn't walk without falling over poor little chap! It could be an ear infection and just not visable yet. Often ear infections are viral anyway so there is still nothing much more you can do than you are already. My DS did end up with antibiotics after being ill for a week with no improvement, and then got better much faster!

I have had the same problem with my little one this week, along with a cough/cold. My doctor prescribed a decongestant, but you can buy sudafed liquid over the counter.

I finally was prescribed antibiotics yesterday, but the doctor was unhappy to do this- he was waiting for the ear drum to perforate!! After a week of my DD climbing the wall and nurofen/calpol not taking the edge off the pain, 3 doses of antibiotic, and she was feeling much better. I just have to convince her to finish the course even though her earache has gone lol

My DD had this regularly, hopeful her eardrum will burst soon and relieve the pressure.

That sounds a horrible thing to write doesn't it?

Look for goo on her hair/pillow.

drcrab · 21/03/2012 21:52

My dd had goo coming out of her ear (felt so bad I had not noticed!!). Antibiotics prescribed immediately (one ear was slightly red). Good luck.

DaftMaul · 21/03/2012 22:52

When both my eardrums perforated (on the same day) last year, it was still agony afterwards for a week or so. I had yellow liquid coming out though, not goo!

SharonGless · 21/03/2012 23:04

My dd suffered the same. Try and regulate pain by giving paracetamol ie calpol then 2 hours later nurofen. Once ear drum popped then pain would be better up more risk of infection and should be checked out by GP

Good luck

Also Gp advised giving probiotic yoghurt to eat regularly, she has been ok for couple of years with ears so worth a try! Could have just grown out of it too I suppose

Warm olive oil in the ear is marvellous. Our gp recommended it for dd.
