Cradle cap in a 3yo- anyone had this?

Just saw that DD has some white/yellowish scales on top of her head. Skin is not red, so not psiorasis, I guess. Just few half inch to inch wide scaley spots scattered around.

I'm feeling a bit guilty, because she's always had daily baths and then I decided maybe it's not so great for her skin and last few weeks she's been having her hair washed only twice a week.

What could have caused it? Can I try the olive oil treatment first? I thought 3yo is way too old for this Confused

Ds has had intermittent cradle cap - last lot was about 2 years ago when he was 6.

Has she got quite a lot of hair now? I found that just combing quite a lot ensuring that all the hair was lifted away from his scalp cleared the last lot. TBH I've never washed his hair more than once a week or so Blush.

My 19 month old has some still and I was half thinking of going to the doctor as dentinox shampoo and head and shoulders have done nothing, nor did oil - it just came back a week or so after I had brushed it all out!

Will watch with interest as I don't want to waste the doctors time.really but am pretty sure it should have all gone by a year.

Loads of conditioner and a combing session a few times a week.
Ds is 4 and I reckon we have just about cracked it!

Thanks for replying. She had this at the usual time, as a newborn or few months old and never since til now.

No, not a lot of hair, very fine and wispy, although they have thickened a bit over the last few months.

I have a feeling it's the grubbiness that caused it Blush

Or-she loves to wash herself under the shower, wash her hair, but is not always great about rinsing the shampoo-I do it, but perhaps not as well as I should- could that be it?

Defo just build up from shampoo not washed out properly. My little one had this too & she hates having her hair rinsed. I obviously wasn't doing it thoroughly enough due to the screaming match. Spoke to 2 hairdressers & they said it was just soap build up. I now only was her hair once/twice a week but rinse really well.

My 5 year old son still gets cradle cap occasionally - never really had it as a baby. He first got it when he was around 3 and hated having his hair washed - we tried the olive oil approach but washing it out of his hair was a disaster so he went around with greasy hair for days which was worse than the cradle cap. So I bought some dentinox and after two washes it was clear. Still use it occasionally when it comes back. I don't think it's eye-sting-free though so you may want to be a little careful. Smells ok too which is a bonus.

Will try oil first and if it doesn't work will have a go with dentinox.

Thanks all Smile

do you actually brush your DD's hair? because they're young we don't think their hair needs brushing, but the scalp needs to be brushed/stimulated to stop the build up of grease/scales... so regular washing and a light brushing with a gentle brush should keep it at bay...

winnybella · 20/03/2012 12:02

No, I don't, or very rarely, as her her is so wispy and straight it sort of falls in place on its own iyswim. Thanks, will do that.
