First time post here, my baby (11 months) has these shiny dots in her hair!!! They are really sparkly like glitter. They glitter gold in light but then look black. Are these unhatched eggs? What am i going to do??????? She is so little. Her older sis (7) brought them home but those look white and come out with a comb! Please help...i am really worried. Am i just being paranoid.

I think that sounds like glitter.

nits are little blobs at the bottom of the hair shaft - it's normally the eggs you see, and they're white.

nickelhasababy · 17/03/2012 14:59

but in case it is nits, then you can get special shampoo from the chemist.

NickettyNacketty · 17/03/2012 15:00

I've never seen shiny nits. They want to blend in to the hair colour to avoid detection.

Bohica · 17/03/2012 15:03

I don't believe nits are shiny Confused

Could be nits. The cases can have a sheen to them if you catch them in a certain light. If they look dark when you look closer, then yes it's a possibility.

When the cases are empty they are white.

Galvanise · 17/03/2012 15:08

I feel rather ahem stupid but immensely relieved !!!! So just to recap, there is no such thing as egg - hatched or unhatched that can shine like gold glitter if you hold it in light but looks black if not in light?? Just double checking - not completely insane honest!! Grin

Have you washed her hair? If it's not nits, it will probably just wash out.

vogonmothership · 17/03/2012 15:19

glitter in hair does indeed shine in light and look black in non light. I found this last week after thoroughly nit combing dd in a panic! It was well stuck on her head too...

Galvanise · 17/03/2012 15:19

I never see them after washing, but i do in the sunlight!!

I kind of want to laugh if it is indeed glitter or cry if it is nits......But if it is glitter, where is it coming from!!! Why is it gold or sometimes silver? Not seen red or green or....IYSWIM? I so want it to be glitter. What is the best scientific experiment that I can do to prove it is glitter or indeed a nit/egg/hatched/unhatched???

OP posts:
MummyDoIt · 17/03/2012 16:13

I think the best scientific experiment would be to sit with your head touching your DD's head for prolonged periods of time. If your head starts to itch a few days later, it was nits!

KnottyLocks · 17/03/2012 16:32

If you can get one of the 'bits', squash if between your nails. If it 'pops', nits.

Also, if you can see close enough, nits are sort of a long oval shape. Glitter tends to be minute squares.

KnottyLocks · 17/03/2012 16:33

Nits will be stuck near to the bottom of the hair shaft, close to the skin. Glitter will be actually on the skin.

Shadowpuppet · 07/01/2020 03:43

I hate to be the party poopers here. Yes the glitter looking things, are freshly hatched nits. The deal here, is their eyes reflect light, making the nits, look like a speck of glitter. If you watch that little speck, they move, and quickly too.
Recently, I went and visited my grandson's, and do to all the hugs, I myself, got head lice from the boys.
They things are no fun, they are resistant, to everything I have done so far. And if you are using a home remedy, please remember, lice can hold there breath, up to 8 hours.. It's crazy, but they have opened 200 Lice Centers around the US and they run anywhere from $80.00 to $200.00. That is where I'm heading next.

LoveSummerLife · 07/01/2020 11:49

Check around the ears, nits tend to lay a lot of eggs in the hair there

ellethekitty · 15/09/2023 19:20

I have this. I have some kind of lice, all over my body. Black and white dots, and the black dots look like gold or brown glitter in the light. did you have lice?

AnotherName1232 · 02/11/2023 00:58

Could be a blood sucking bug that shines like glitter. Perhaps the iron in our blood might have something to do with the shine.

With lice, comes body lice also.
