High Temp - How long for?

DS (4.1) has had a high temperature since 5pm yesterday - flushed cheeks, hot to the touch and lethargic. He has a high pain threshold so I know he's unwell but the way he's acting. Also saying his neck hurts and his legs and head ache. He was awake at 10, 12, 2 and then finally up for good at 4am too.

Has had 3 doses of Calpol since 5pm, and 1 dose of Ibuprofen at 4am, temp has come down a little but the out of hours GP service in my area were very offhand and more or less told me I was making a fuss about nothing and that they didn't want to/couldn't see him until 8am. The thing is, how long can you give a child paracetamol etc for realistically - I asked the GP who phoned a while ago and he couldn't tell me.

I think I'll have to get him to my GP at 8am.

To be honest some of those symptoms are red flag symptoms - the neck ache can be indicative of something more serious.

Does he have any rashes or an aversion to light? Is he alert (I know it's night but can you rouse him and is he understanding you/understandable). What is his temp? Is he able to stand? Any indication of a cold/cough etc?

My ds (4) has just had a confirmed bout of flu and he was ill for 8 days, 5 days with a temp but also really tearful, didn't eat.

However, depending on your answer to the above I might be taking him to A & E and not waiting for the GP at 8am.

Checked for rash each time he was up in the night and nothing to see, he doesn't seem to be too sensitive to light, he can stand but doesn't really want to. He has had a cough for ages which my GP says is Asthma related but I'm not so sure.

Ah my DS was the same - trip to the docs confirmed raging tonsillitis

Deffo get him checked

Ok so you have done all the emergency checks and therefore as long as he doesn't deteriorate in the next hour I can see that waiting until 8 is fine as long as they can get him in one of the earlier appointments.

Is it possible that he has a secondary infection after the cough you say he had for ages or as ruby says tonsillitis or just another virus/flu are all possible.

Hope you get him sorted and he is well again really soon.
