17mo ill - but not sure if I'm imagining things

DS has had a temp since he woke up on Sunday. Alternating calpol and neurofen I can't get it below 38, and at night it's going up to 39.6. He's sleeping less, napping less and eating less and crying/whimpering most of the time. He's also fighting the medicine when normally he actually seems to like it.

His whole body is hot to touch except his hands and feet, which are cold despite socks.

Anyway, I just got him up from a nap and I'm sure his hands and wrists look swollen. They also look marbled, iyswim, hands to about halfway up forearms. But I'm not sure if I'm just imagining that (I'm pretty sleep deprived). And if I'm not, I'm not sure what it could be Confused

I would get him checked out, marbelled looking can be a sign of low oxygen levels. Is he breathing ok?

ImpYCelyn · 13/03/2012 14:19

Yes, breathing fine. They're looking less marbelled now, so I'm sure I wasn't imagining it, but I wonder if it was a problem while he was asleep.

I think I'll phone the GP. Thanks.

Take him to the doctors. 3 days of temperatures that high is a lot in a tot that age. See if you can get him in this afternoon. Tell them exactly what you wrote here & say you really think he needs to see someone today.

Yes, sounds like he needs to see the doctor. Cold hands/feet while running a temperature may not be serious, but also can be a sign of more serious problems.

Just spoke to NHS direct who said to see the GP. GP has no appointments, but they're going to call me back and will see me if it sounds urgent.

Thanks everyone

Been to see the GP, apparently it's hand, foot and mouth. So nothing scary, phew!

Thanks again :)

Glad it's nothing serious, hope he's better soon!
