Having spent 30 mins trying to get through to dr surgery and failing, thought I'd post on here in case any medical mums reading. DS1 age 10 was poorly over the weekend, high temp and thumping headache Fri night and all day sat. Temp down yesterday, just very washed out and no energy. Took his temp when he went to bed last night, it was 35.6. Thought that was a bit low, his hands and feet were ok, tho his face was chilly. kept him off school today, bit pale and knackered looking, still has bad headache, temp 34.6 when I last took it. (with brand new thermometer.) He's ok in himself, watching DVD and giggling occcasionally, but what's with the temperature variation?

I think a low temp can indicate infection as can a high one. Get him checked out whne you can.

mm thanks. There are 2 viruses doing the rounds at school, one a sickness bug, the other high temp. So I imagine dr will just say it's a virus, but it's a new one on me when temp goes down like that. I'll see if I can get an appointment.

What kind of thermometer are you using?

landofsoapandglory · 12/03/2012 11:29

DS2 had that a couple of years ago, GP said it was a virus and temp can go down as well as up when you are ill!

oral digital thermometer, bought a new one this morning, in case my other one was dodgy!

Hmm strange isn't it? An ear thermometer is the most accurate but even so you'd expect a reasonably accurate reading from a new oral thermometer. Did you recheck it? Sometimes if I get a reading I don't believe I will recheck it in 5-10 mins.

DH (GP) always tells me to treat the symptoms and not necessarily the temperature. You say he's ok in himself so he's probably alright.
