My 5 yr old is poorly , he has a temp of 39 (underarm so that is 40 isn't it ?)
He has been kind of sick (no food in it just bile and watery stuff )
All he wants to do is sleep but keeps waking complaining of a sore stomach , throat and just now legs .

I am running a fine line between convincing myself it is just a bug and thinking he is actually properly ill . The reason for this is ten years ago I was told my 14mth old had a cold and possible slight chest infection and within hours he died .

How do I work this stuff out now ? I can feel the panic in me rising but I just don't know how to sail through this shit anymore .

Sorry for being all self indulgent and stuff but could do with a manly pat or some such reassurance .

If it helps, my 4 yo daughter has just spent the last three days with exactly the symptoms you describe as part of a really nasty tummy bug. However, you should go with your instinct, and if you feel you need reassurance go and get it. Anyone would understand.

I am so sorry to hear about your son.

Yep, we have had it here too, and it's vile. I did end up at the GP with DSs who are 9 and 12 just for reassurance. Please go if you are worried, it is understandable.

curiousparent · 08/03/2012 16:47

travelling sorry to hear about your lo, it will understandably leave you feeling very apprehensive about any illness and I am sure any GP would understand this.

I lost my DS nearly 10 years ago (to cancer) but still other illnesses in my DS2 (nearly 4) and DD (15mo) make me so nervous. My GP's are absolutely fab about checking lo's out as needed and I really don't think you should suffer this worry on your own.

My DS2 currently has flu and is really poorly - I check his temp far more than your average parent and regularly assess him for any other changes in his well being, it helps me feel better doing this!

In your circumstances I would get them checked out, but I am sure you will still continue to check the them continuously anyway!

All the best xxx

Thank you all so much , I am feeling a wee bit calmer now . A friend has just rung to see how he is and told me her children had it a couple of weeks ago and the symptoms were the same . So at least I can believe it is a bug and nothing more sinister . Will continue to get a grip .

I am sorry about your son curious it is so bloody tiring sometimes isn't it ?

I will contact my gp if I get worried or panicky .

Thank you x

If you still feel the same tomorrow get a GP appointment otherwise you will have the OOH malarkey over the weekend. Smile

travellingwilbury · 08/03/2012 17:15

Thanks sparkling I will do , I don't deal well with OOH malarkey , would rather just drive the half hour to A & E and deal with the hospital .

Morning travelling. How's things?

That's why it takes so long to get seen at A&E - people take themselves/their children to A&E as a matter of convenience instead of necessity.

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2012 07:49

Harsh and unnecessary comment Lougle considering what travellingwilbury has been through.

Convert · 09/03/2012 07:52

That might be your view lougle but is this really the thread to air it? The op is understandably concerned about her ill child, made worse by having already lost a lo. Back off.

lougle Thanks for that , the reason I don't deal well with OOH is it was an OOH dr who insisted I was over reacting and my son was fine , within hours he had died in my arms . So forgive me if I don't quite trust the system any more .

He seems brighter today and I have calmed down as well , thanks everyone . It does seem like a pretty grim flu type bug that is doing the rounds , so lots of lying on the sofa for us today .

Are you going to be indulging in any rubbish daytime TV travelling?

travellingwilbury · 09/03/2012 09:17

At the moment we have the delights of Fireman sam , I am hoping he nods off soon so I can watch some rubbish of my own . My netbook is having a crisis so I am on my old pc which keeps turning itself off so I might have to actually do something constructive if fireman sam carries on for much longer .

Norman makes me want to throw things at the tv Blush

Erm...you didn't make the link between what happened 10 years ago and OOH doctors.

Your statement was "I don't deal well with OOH malarkey , would rather just drive the half hour to A & E and deal with the hospital ."

A&E are no better placed to predict if what currently presents as a cold/mild chest infection will become life threatening, than OOH.

I'm sorry to hear that your 14 month old died Sad

travellingwilbury · 09/03/2012 10:39

Thanks for coming back lougle

Tbh I find it very difficult to trust any medical staff , that is my over riding difficulty , I also don't trust my own judgement any more , even though I have been told there was nothing that would have saved him , I would still prefer to be in a hosptal if I was worried where I could get a second opinion .

But my youngest is 5 and so far I have never taken him to hospital thankfully .

Lougle are you this harsh in RL or just on here?

curiousparent · 09/03/2012 14:43

Travelling I think it is totally understandable that you find it difficult to trust any medical staff after what you have been through and should not have to justify yourself to anyone who has nothing helpful to say. I am not surprised you would prefer to be in a hospital, there are better facilities for diagnostics, second opinions and equipment that can be used in an emergency.

I know from experience that it can be very difficult to diagnose conditions and that even very thorough doctors can get things 'wrong'.

I disagree that A & E is no better a place as they can easily refer to on the paediatrics who are better placed to diagnose children than GP's.

All the best to you and your little one xxx

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/03/2012 14:51

How are things now TW?
I totally understand.

Just wanted to say that.

Big hugs and get well soon wishes for DS x
