Any tips on how to shake this persistent cough?

My 19 m. old has had a cough for about a month. I went to the doctors and because he is eating/sleeping well, and has no temperature, nothing further was done. Which is fine, but I can hear him hacking away in his cot and I feel so bad for him. I rubbed some Vicks on his chest so at least he can breathe a little more easily, but I wonder if there is anything else I can do to chase this horrid cough away.

My son has an almost constant cough when he was around your child's age. He is now 3.5yrs old and turns out he has asthma. The doctor told me that its very difficult to diagnose in young children so you may not be sure if it is asthma or not for another year or two. I hope it isn't asthma but if it is, most kids grow out of it.

Best of luck.
