My ds aged 4 was ill with a virus fluey type thing for a couple of weeks as did we all but his ended with him getting very swollen glands like golf balls so big he could barely turn his neck and huge tonsills so i took him to the gp who said it was viral his tonsils were clear 5 days later they had gone smaller but since then 3 weeks ago they have continued to swell and then go alittle smaller but never really gone . he came home from school today with huge glands and tonsills again in alot of pain so i took him again to gp but got the same result he said it could take 3 weeks to clear but im at that now and hate keep giving him so much painkillers for so long .I just wondered has anyone else experienced this i just feel so sorry for him he looks so uncomfortable but other that that he's in good form .

Do you know why your GP is so sure that it is a virus? I would ask for a second opinion, e.g. either go and see a different GP or out of hours GP. It seems that it is going on for quite a while now and swollen glands can also indicate serious bacterial infection. I had a swollen gland the size of a golf ball, first GP told me it was stress and a virus. I then started hallucinating, went to OOH and I had developed blood poisoning. I ended up on IV anti biotics, massive massive doses of anti-biotics, but luckily enough they worked after several days and the huge gland in my neck started shrinking and several weeks later I was fine but very tired. If I had not gone to OOH I probably would be dead now.

Hi dikkertjedap i have seen 2 different doctors both said the same i think if the tonsils are clear no pus etc it means its viral rather than bacterial so antibiotics useless and he's not unwell with it either just in pain

I am not a doctor, but I had nothing wrong with my tonsils, just a golf ball sized gland in my neck, which turned out to be caused by blood poisoning. I did not have any fever, apart from feeling unwell and finally hallucinating, no other symptoms apart from the gland. It is hard to say what to do, depends a bit how much you trust the doctors you have seen as well. If they are usually good and thorough, maybe wait longer. If unsure, go to A&E where he will be seen by a paediatrician.
