High platelets

My DD has been having repeated blood tests initially due to slow weight gain.

The hospital seem reassured about her weight now as although she is still under the bottom percentile in the red book she is consistently gaining.

The last two bloods however have shown raise platelet levels. It was explained that this indicated low iron or possible a viral infection.

We are going again tomorrow to repeat bloods.

My DD finds this very distressing and therefore so do I and DH. I have asked but they have failed to explain exactly what they are looking for or what the implications are is her platelets are still high.

Any ideas?

Obviously we will go ahead with the tests if needed but I don't want to put her through the stress needlessly.

What are they actually looking for?
