DS (7.5 yrs) has a birthmark - or it may be a mole - on his lower back. He has had it since birth and it has never been exposed to sunshine (we are careful in the sun - don't go on 'sunny hols' - and it is below the waistband. It is roughly 5x7mm, irregular shaped and slightly raised. Colour is a pretty even brown (not dark or black).
I showed it to a doctor about a year ago and he said 'Its a freckle!'.
I was at the doctors last week and showed it to him (a different doctor) who said 'ooooooo - mole - I'll send you to a dermatologist. He'll probably want to take it off.'
So my question - before I have a stroke - is, why would you take it off? Could it be somethig 'nasty'? He is not in any of the 'at risk' groups - no skin cancers in the family, he has an olive complexion, not exposed to sun, never sunburned, its not itchy or bleeding, and only seems to have grown with him.
Am I being a panicky old boot? And... breathe...
