Constipation in 6 week old baby

My 6 weeks old DS seems to be getting constipated. For the last week he's only been having one dirty nappy and day. He was having one almost every feed. He's passing lots of wind.

Bit of feeding background .... He was feed pretty much exclusively expressed breast milk (maybe 1 ff a day) up until 2 weeks ago, my supply started going down hill so he was having a lot more formula. We are working on getting him back on the breast at the moment so there are changes in his food. The formula he's on is Hipp Organic. I try and feed him some water each day.

Does anyone have any tips on things we can do to help him or any experience with Hipp? We saw the GP today and he wasn't concerned, I'm seeing a BF counsellor tomorrow and he said to ask her about what formula we should use.

I am sure your breastfeeding counselor was helpful on the increasing your milk supply. I wonder if its just that the formula is digested differently? But if its constipation then baby massage can help.

breastfeed as much as you possibly can, drink lots of water yourself. :)

1 poo a day is fine. At that age my ds started going 2-3 days between poos but wasnt constipated as the poo was still soft when it eventually arrived. Breastfed babies can also go a week or more without pooing without being constipated.

Thanks for your replies, he's not fully breastfeed yet. He's started getting back on the breast but still having a lot of forumla while my supply increases and I can ease him off the bottles.

Up until about a week ago he was having 5 - 7 dirty nappies a day and now he's only having 1 each day or two, is that right? I don't think so as he seems agitated and in pain, what he does pass is very very smelly as well.

I'm hoping that as my supply increases and he's breastfeed more that he'll become more regular but at the moment I really don't feel this is normal for my baby. Unless anyone else has had such a change at this stage?
