Son's Feet...and now hands peeling!

Hi...my sons toes and feet have been peeling for about the last couple of weeks. Now today his fingers have started peeling too! In big chunks of skin, not just little dry bits. Almost like he had big blisters but he didn't. I took him to GP and the first thing that he mentioned was Kawasaki disease as that is a symptom..but he didn't have any of the other symptoms so he kind of ruled that out. My son does have a bad cough though...does that have anything to do with it? I've also read that Kawasaki disease can cause re-occurent peeling of skin....could it be that he had Kawasaki when he was younger (he's 7 now) and it was missed and now he's having this skin peeling problem?
Doctor said that it could be fungal but it doesn't look fungal at all to me! No redness or itchiness at all...even GP thought it wasn't a perfect diagnosis but he didn't know what else it could be.
Anyone else kids have the same problem! Am quite worried as I can't find anything to explain it! (except the Kawasaki Disease!)
Thx!

I have to say it sounds fungal to me, I've had atheletes foot that isn't sore and itchy but was the same as you describe - worth trying an anti fungal and see if it helps, quick and easy to try

Being the mother of a child who has had KD please get him checked again.

another mum who has had a child with kawasakies disease, it was the LAST symptom that he got, please get your son checked over again.

my ds3 had it and he is now fine but was very poorly and we had months of worry afterwards before knowing that he was going to be fine.

has he had any blisters at all, even tiny ones under the skin? I have a form of 'wet' ezcema dyshidrosis- though mine is mild unlike scary wiki photo where I get little tiny blisters of fluid under my skin on my hands and feet, and in between my toes. Sometimes you can hardly see them and they come up quickly then go, followed by patches of skin that peel off like you describe. Skin is usually a normal colour but can be itchy- it is in hot weather for me.

This type of ezcema is quite rare apparently (but runs in my family).

would echo get checked for KD though too, but my current GP had no clue about my type of ezcema, luckily my previous one did!

workshy · 19/01/2012 22:46

another vote for dyshidrosis

I get it, in between my toes, instep and outside edge of my feet, fingers and predominantly the centre of my palms

blisters come and go very quickly then the skin peels off in sheets

if I scratch it it itches but if I leave it alone it doesn't bother me if that makes any sense at all had it misdiagnosed by several doctors as it is a pretty unusual form of eczema -no dry skin!

strawberrymivvi · 19/01/2012 22:52

I used to get this every few months as a child and both dd and ds have had periods of it. It always would appear after a rapid growth spurt, I just thought it was a bit like being a snake getting too big for it's skin.

4madboys · 19/01/2012 22:53

oh i get those funny little blisters too, they are really tiny and yes my skin peels, i have eczema tho so just put it down to that! hadnt realised it wasn actual condition!

it could well be something like that but do get him checked for KD.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I am still putting the fungal cream on twice a day but it's only been 2 days so I haven't seen any improvement at all. For those who suggested getting him checked again for KD...how do I do that? He's not ill now (except for a cough) so the doctor said he's not going down that route.....could he have had it previously and it was not diagnosed? and he's only now peeling? Or is that not possible? I read that the peeling could re-occur for a long time after KD but since he's never peeled before I don't know if that's what it is. It's a bit worrying as it really is coming off in chunks! If it was fungal, I wonder if it'd be on his hands as well. Noone else in family has got it....
