Night time coughing - what do you do?

DD has recently had a cold and has now been left with an irritating tickly cough especially at night. Last night she seemed to cough all night long and because she got so distressed at one point, I had her in with me. Although she seemed to sleep through most of the night I didn't!! Sad

I gave her drinks in the night when she was awake but nothing seemed to help. What do you do when this happens to your child? Have you got any special remedies? I need something for her sake and mine Sad

How old is she?

We use snufflebabe on their chests (the vapours are nice) and leave a mug of water on top of thier radiator to keep the air a little more moist.

When they were younger we'd elevate the head end of the cot, and use a calpol plug in thing.

How long has it been going on for? Night time coughing is common in asthmatics so it might be worth a trip to the GP if it's been a while

Could you raise the end of her mattress with a pillow or something? Sometimes it helps not to be lying completely flat.

She's 2 nearly 3. It's not been going on that long an my older 2 have also had it, their coughs have just about gone now. I think it just seems worse with her because she is that much younger.

I have been trying to prop her up with pillows but she keeps sliding down. I will pop a pillow under her mattress tonight - much better idea thanks! I'll get some snuffle babe too! Can you get it in Boots?

I put vaporub on the soles of DS's feet then a wee pair of socks.

No idea how it works but it really seems to help my DS when he has a cough!!!!

We do the vapour rub on feet here too, and a spoonful of honey seems to stop the night time coughing a bit too.

night time coughing . . .try raising the end of the cot or bed with books. Put water next to radiators to make the atmosphere less dry. this time of year we have the windows closed and the heating on which doesn't help. Steam is great. before we had a humidifier I used to take the lid off a steam steriliser. . . Works a treat . try add g a few drops of karvol . warm drinks . If she is still coughing primarily at night in a day or so I'd take her to see your GP.

Humidifier. Dd2 had bronchiolitis when she was 3 months and it made such a difference. Now it comes out whenever any of us has a cough.

Hope she gets well soon.
