GP not being very helpful regarding Circumcision

I went to see the GP recently at the first check-up after DS2 was born, and I said that because DS1 was circumcised (-he was born in US, where it kind of gets done as a routine just after boys are born-), we wanted to get DS2 done as well, while he's still a newborn. I was really surprised when the GP tried to talk me out of getting it done, which means that I'm a bit lost as to where next to turn to get this done. I can understand that circumcision isn't available on the NHS, which is fine, but if I want to go private, don't I need a GP referral? Should I just seek a second GP's opinion?
Anyone have any experience of getting their boys circumcised in a culture that generally doesn't do it?

"nicer and tidier"

Bleurgh.

You make me sick.

How dare you decide to put your child through a painful and unnecessesary operation to conform to your preference for circumcised cock. Yuk yuk yuk.

Debster7808 · 08/01/2012 13:16

Get over yourselves, you lot. Show a little respect and open-mindedness. Circumcision is the most common surgery on earth, and many cultures opt for it for various reasons. It is a personal choice that many make. Accept it.
And this is my personal family decision, not yours.
The way some of you are over-reacting, it's as if I was forcing you to circumcise your child against your will. I would never seek to influence what you believe is right for your children. That's your decision, and not mine.

If the head of the penis is permanently exposed to the air

is his penis likely to be exposed to the air the whole time? I mean, that IS what permanently means, isn't it?

Or will it be tucked in his pants? Because cutting off a pieces of skin doesn't make it clean. CLEANING it does.

I'll show you respect when you show respect for the integrity and perfection of your baby son's body as it is.

FriggFRIGG · 08/01/2012 13:17

If you are so open minded, why won't you read the fucking LINKS?!

TheFarSide · 08/01/2012 13:19

How can it be a personal choice for your son Debster if you are making the decision for him?

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/01/2012 13:19

NHS vs private - check
US vs UK - check
Different cultural norms - check

really this time

Sirzy · 08/01/2012 13:20

I find it hard to respect people who will make a choice to purposely make their child suffer with no reason to do so. Sorry if that offends you!

MelodyPondering · 08/01/2012 13:21

I give up, I really hope you do the best for your boy. But If you dont, I hope one day he asks you to explain why on earth you did It.

Just one more question, you did read the link that explained that boys have DIED from having this done I hope, are you really happy to take that risk?

Hulababy · 08/01/2012 13:22

A GP is only likely to refer for a circumcision if there is a medical reason for it.
In this case there appears not to be, so they are not likely to refer.
It would be unreasonable to expect a GP to do so really if you think about it.
It would not necessarily be in the best interests of their patient to do so.

As for your reasons - yes, it is your choice to prefer it or not. However, it is not your own body you want to carry out this procedure on is it?

I used to live in the US. There is a lot they there that we don't do here and vice versa. Like I said earlier, I suggest that the OP hops on a plane with her baby and gets it done in the US for her cultural and cosmetic reasons.

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/01/2012 13:22

I think it's mutilation regardless of what religion anyone is.

LittleGnu · 08/01/2012 13:23

Circumcision is disgusting and should be illegal (unless for very clear medical reasons). And the idea of having a child done just because his brother has been mutilated is simply sick beyond words.
If you insist, then have yourself circumcised at the same time.

Bunbaker · 08/01/2012 13:24

"many cultures opt for it for various reasons"

A great number of people in those cultures live in third world countries that don't enjoy clean sanitation that we do. In the developed world with access to clean water circumcision isn't necessary.

We aren't ganging up on you, but I think you can take this as an indication of how we in the UK view this practice. Therefore you shouldn't be surprised at the lack of support from your GP. Also, I would be very wary of a doctor who would be willing to undertake this op unless they were personally recommended because they may not have sufficient experience and may botch it and cause even more unnecessary suffering.

MaryZed · 08/01/2012 13:25

I think it's interesting that there has been a law passed about mutilation of animals for cosmetic reasons, but it is still legal for children.

It just shows how the animal welfare groups are more successful at this type of thing that the children's rights groups (due to the insistence on giving parents more-or-less unlimited rights over their children).

TheFarSide · 08/01/2012 13:26

Grin @ LittleGnu

Two for the price of one?

LittleGnu · 08/01/2012 13:28

There's absolutely no reason for anyone to have part of their body cut off without their consent. I'm male, and uncircumcised, and if my parents had allowed me to be mutilated I would be very angry with them to put it mildly.
