GP not being very helpful regarding Circumcision

I went to see the GP recently at the first check-up after DS2 was born, and I said that because DS1 was circumcised (-he was born in US, where it kind of gets done as a routine just after boys are born-), we wanted to get DS2 done as well, while he's still a newborn. I was really surprised when the GP tried to talk me out of getting it done, which means that I'm a bit lost as to where next to turn to get this done. I can understand that circumcision isn't available on the NHS, which is fine, but if I want to go private, don't I need a GP referral? Should I just seek a second GP's opinion?
Anyone have any experience of getting their boys circumcised in a culture that generally doesn't do it?

Why do I have to see a newborn baby being cut with a sharp knife to decide if it's cruel or not? It is a totally unnecessary operation and, I believe, mutilation regardless of religion.

Debster7808 · 08/01/2012 13:53

Oh so you lot have a monopoly on being insulting and disrespectful?

LittleGnu · 08/01/2012 13:53

MrsMicawber Even if we pretend that it's painless (yeah, right!), it's still without consent (obviously) and puts the baby at no advantage in life (and many disadvantages). There are no reasons to do it unless for medical reasons.

Gribble · 08/01/2012 13:55

Debster - will do, who did yours for you? I always go on recommendations you see....

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/01/2012 13:57

It's your views/beliefs/assertions that people were being 'insulting and disrespectful' towards, OP - not you, personally. You, on the other hand, were personally insulting towards Gribble.

MaryZed · 08/01/2012 13:57

Thisisyesterday, you had a post deleted upthread. I noticed your post, and I just want to introduce you to my (now perfected) art of post-separation Grin.

You had a useful post, followed by an insult. What you need to do is:

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/01/2012 13:57

.... which contravenes MN's talk guidelines.

Faverolles · 08/01/2012 13:57

Assuming this is for real.....

IIRC, a big reason for circumcision becoming mainstream in the US was to do with the fact that it takes away the urge of teenage boys to masterbate, due to the desensitisation of the head of the penis. So this is a positive, if you are a religious nut who believes masterbation is sin.
It's also mainstream because the bible says that God wanted his followers to remove the foreskin to be in his image.
The bible is at best fiction, at worst a steaming pile of shit that can be interpreted to defend murder, rape and all sorts of lovely things.

OP, with all due respect to your dh, as he cannot compare having a foreskin to being circumcised, he cannot say for sure that it's better to be circumcised can he?

My Ds was done aged 6 due to medical problems. He had a post-op infection and ended up back in hospital in huge pain. Babies are not immune from post-op pain and infection, so I think you are deluded to think this will be painfree, and if you realise that pain is involved, and you're still wanting to put a tiny newborn boy through that, well, words fail me :(

All the supposed pro's for circumcision are myths, yet it's still mainstream in so many places :(

MaryZed · 08/01/2012 13:57

OP, circumcision isn't a good idea for various reasons .... insert informative and interesting post ....

Neuromantic · 08/01/2012 13:58

Its just that those of us who don't mutilate children on a whim have the moral high ground, Debster, unlike yourself.

Did you see what I did there - I separated out my second post, so if it is deleted, the original interesting and informative post is still there.

A lesson for all who post in AIBU Grin

differentnameforthis · 08/01/2012 13:59

boys can suffer from infections (even in the developed world) which means that they have to be circumcised later in childhood

My youngest is getting over an ear infection...perhaps I should have removed her ears at birth to prevent it.

And my chest infection....maybe not having a chest would help that. May go & see the dr about that...Hmm

Faverolles · 08/01/2012 14:00

Well done Maryz - never thought of doing that :o

pooka · 08/01/2012 14:02

Mary z - that is genius. You sneaky thing! Grin

differentnameforthis · 08/01/2012 14:02

Debster7808 quite clearly realises the argument has been well and truly lost and is resorting to insults

Agreed, littlegnu! One loses the argument as soon as they start insulting people.

pooka · 08/01/2012 14:03

Sorry - maryzed that should be.

Gribble · 08/01/2012 14:04

Different - I can beat that, I get dreadful migraines so Im just going to get rid of my head. Job done. Or would a lobotomy help with the headaches? Confused

ClownStatue · 08/01/2012 14:06

She'll mention Hitler or the Nazis soon and invoke Godwins law. Not that she needs to having well and truly lost this one already.

Debster7808 · 08/01/2012 14:08

differentnameforthis,
I have been called a mutilator, a moron and a fuckwit, so on this basis, my side is down one point, and your side is down three? Well, you said that One loses the argument as soon as they start insulting people. Oh, but hang on, that doesn't suit your argument, so scratch that one. Yep, keep having a go at me, don't stop.

In any case, this 'argument', as you put it is descending into an emotional rant that is numerically in your favour, but not intellectually so, particularly with your reductio ad absurdam argument techniques.

OP posts:
differentnameforthis · 08/01/2012 14:09

MrsMicawber

Both my girls howled during their heal pricks, are you saying that that was more traumatic than having skin sliced off one of the males most delicate areas?

differentnameforthis · 08/01/2012 14:09

gribble, I think it may make them worse, you know!

MaryZed · 08/01/2012 14:11

Well the moron was deleted, I didn't call you a fuckwit, I was illustrating a point, and you weren't called a mutilator - you were told that, in our (as in many of us) opinion, what you are doing is mutilation.

You know, just sometimes if 1 person has an opinion, and the other 99 out of a hundred have a different opinion, it is a good idea for the one to just consider that they might be wrong.

Just a thought.

TheFarSide · 08/01/2012 14:11

LittleGnu I am not disagreeing with you - I thought it was a great idea for the OP to get herself done at the same time (made me laugh, that's all).

Neuromantic · 08/01/2012 14:11

But they aren't insults, they are just true.

There is no argument here. You are wrong. Rarely is a question so easily answered as this one. Your dr says so, the governement says so, the hospitals you have asked to mutilate your child for you all say so. everyone here says so.

Take the fucking hint lady.
