My dd 4 is lying here next 2 me absolutely heaving as usual with huge amounts of mucous and snot. She will cough most of the night and need her inhaler every couple of hours. she will need brufen most of tomorrow with either ear ache or temp . I will and have spent most of Nov to March up with her at night with same and terrible croup . We will be in and out of the children's ward and on stupid amounts of antibiotics . her temp will soar and she will fit and I will cry and so it goes on. All my children have been like this every year at this time of year and I know she will grow out of it, but right in the middle of it is there ANYTHING i can try ? She is 18 months and breast fed still . X

Medised? I know the advice changed a few years ago and you're not supposed to give it under 6, but when my DS was poorly like this a few years ago we gave it to him on the direct advice of the doctor and it did help to dry up the snot/mucus. You could mention it to your GP and see what he says. Good luck

When I got to my wits end with mine we decided to try homeopathy as its all about strengthing natural immunity (and a bit like counselling as you get to off load and talk about other solutions ie diet and feel like you are doing something proactive to help rather than waiting for a chesty cough to turn into an infection Sad)

My homeopath says natural immunity starts in the gut so whilst she isn't keen on antibiotics they do save lives and when they are prescribed you should have heaps of probiotics to assist recovery.

Minadex iron tonic with sweet corn or prune juice as it can be constipation, but works like a charm to build them up after illness.

My son is 3.5 and has had the same for the last 2 years. Doc suspects asthma and so we're trying treatment for that. He has been taking the steroid inhaler for about 3 weeks and so far no more cough or runny nose!.. Amazing this time of year!

did you say you give ibuprofen? my son is exaclty the smae october to february is awful especailly his chest but we were told only to give paracetamol not brufen as it makes wheezes etc worse

Sirzy · 12/01/2012 21:12

Mumtoaandj - some asthmatics react badly to brufen, DS can't have it because it makes him worse but thats not the case for all of them although if in doubt don't give it of course.
