Awful conjunctivitis in 4yo - hygiene tips??

As the title says, my 4yo has had a nasty case of conjunctivitis since Boxing Day. He's been given ointment by the GP but we're only on day two and there's no visible improvement. His eyes are totally red, swollen lids, streaming and lots of yellow gunk (sorry!)

Trouble is, he's terrible at using a tissue to wipe his face, and will just rub his eyes on his sleeve or his hand, then his hands go everywhere, including his mouth - which has led to a bout of diarrhoea this evening Sad I've been trying to reming him to use an old muslin but it's not working...

...We are now on Day 4 of solitary confinement (except for shops/doctors - not seen any friends/family etc as it's so bad) and DS2 has picked it up now, though his case isn't as bad, and the lovely GP prescribed me the same ointment 'just in case' as it was inevitable that he'd get it.

How long does it usually take to clear up? 4 days seems a long time for it to be this bad. Is there anything else I can do/give him? Any any hygiene tips?? Thankyou!

are you bathing them (the eyes) with cotton wool pads and cool boiled water?

Yes, first thing in the morning to unglue them, but he won't let me near them any other time of day - it's a horrible battle to get the ointment in but it's got to be done. Just hideous!
