Taking medicine

Ds ended up on hospital on boxing day and to cut a long story short after them giving him medicine that made him ill he is now point blank refusing to take any at all.

We were sent home today and he refuses to take any. I am sitting here in tears and I do not know what to do apart from hold him down and syringe it in.

Dh says not to threaten him but if he does not take the medicine he will end up back in hospital on a drip.

Help please

is it antibiotics?
how old is the child?
when my dc1 was 2 he had pneumonia and would take neither calpol not the required antibiotic. we went back, got paracetamol suppositories and ab capsules. we openec the capsules and mixed the powder with nutella which worked a treat.

oiwheresthecoffee · 28/12/2011 17:44

Mix with something ? Most pills can be crushed..im crap with tablets and do it myself...a smoothie is a good one...extra sugar if need be :) or mix with er honey ...i like mousy s idea of nutella..nomnom.

ChablisLover · 28/12/2011 17:45

Yes anti biotics

Ds is nearly 5

Am in absolute fits of tears through lack of sleep over past three days, the fighting of taking the medicine and from dh telling me I am bad mother for trying to reason rather than bribe and to tell ds he would end up back in hospital if he didn't take the medicine

It's a big song and dance and I would rather not fight with him but I so want him to get better.

call gp for another prescription for capsules. you can mix the contents with whatever he likes best, peanut butter, jam, caramel syrup...

SparkySparrow · 28/12/2011 18:28

There is other things that they can give you! Go back and tell them that he wont take it! I had the same problem last week and got some better tasting bearable stuff! The first stuff they gave us made my son physically sick at the mention of said medicine.

ChablisLover · 28/12/2011 19:06

He is already refusing to take the bed time dose after promising the world earlier.

I say leave it and get another tomorrow from go. Dh says no - he already has a steroid thing to take - he was in with an asthma attack - and it will be hard enough to get him to take it.

What does he like?

We've mixed it into baked beans, ice cream, yogurt and loads of other stuff.

I would mix it into something but not let him know its there, and don't make a big deal about him eating it, if he eats it great, if he eats some of it, ok, if he refuses it then at least you've tried.

oiwheresthecoffee · 28/12/2011 19:36

Something strong tasting...golden syrup ?

ChablisLover · 28/12/2011 19:55

Tried chocolate - nope 1/2 hour screaming match followed by wrestling hold approach.

Appointment at docs tomorrow will try and get a new one but dh thinks we will have to perservere until the end of the course.

I could kill the hospital registrar who insisted that although the first one made him violently ill that he would have to have it again. Of course it made him ill and he has refused all medicine getting v upset since then. Surely it only take someone to be sick once after medicine to say well it obviously disagree with them best try something else.

That and the blooming junior doc never even recorded on notes that he got inhalers for his asthma!!

I dont think chocolate works that well. Mainly because you taste the stuff before you get it. The stuff i take is pretty vile and i cant swallow the capsules so i do mix it with something strong or the taste makes me gag. It needs to be hidden in something...i suppose melted chocolate might work... Sorry if im stating the obvious there ! Hopefully you will get something better tomorrow from your GP anyway. :)

sneezecakesmum · 30/12/2011 11:14

Ask for an alternative from the GP. My DGS hates flucloxicillin and vomits it, but will take amoxicillin (or the other way round Confused.

ChablisLover · 30/12/2011 18:10

They won't give an alternative as it was prescribed by hospital

Using jelly beans bribery and corruption to get it in

Only 9 more doses!
