bleeding umbilical cord

My 9 day old baby kicked off the clamp for his umbilical cord when he was being changed when he was about 5 days old. I have since noticed some bits of blood around it when changing him. There isn't much. I left a message for the midwife but they are a bit slack and no-one got back to me. I was unsure whether to clean it or not so have just left it to dry and put a bit of dressing (not fluffy - the shiny type) over til the midwife comes. What do you think?

They do sometimes have a little bit there. If it is not inflammed around it then there should be no real worry. You can use a little damp cotton wool to clean around the area and just keep an eye on it. Call the GP if you are worried if you can't get hold of the midwife.
