Ds has had a fever for last 2 nights but was fine during day. just taken temp and is now 40.5 despite calpol 20mins ago. says he feels ok but is not his normal self but then he's not ever awake at this time. often gets high temps like this ie 40 +. No other ailments afaik other than being awake now. any ideas what i should do?

Give it another 20 minutes for Calpol to do its work, sometimes it take sa bit of time. If he's not feeling ill, he's not confused/floppy, no headache, stiff neck, rash etc, then it's probably just a minor bug. Make sure it's not too stuffy and hot in his room and he's not overdressed, but don't strip him. You can put a tea towel soaked in cool water on his forehead and/or wrap it around his wrists and calves.

Depending on his age you can alternate calprofen (or other ibuprofen based medicine) with calpol. Also, such a high temperature clearly indicates an infection, so I would keep a close eye and if he still has a high temperature tonight I would try to speak to a doctor (maybe telephone consultation if your GP does that). Does he have any other symptoms? Cough? Noisy breathing? Eating well? Does he have sore throat or earache? Also make sure he keeps drinking well, even if only water.
