Varruca - How Do They Look At The Start & Do They Hurt ??

ie: feel as is "a big needle is stabbed deep into in my foot when I walk" - DDs description of the pain :(

Long & complicated we never get anything normal in this damned household

DD started with what looked a bit like a large boil on the front pad of her foot - she said it felt as if something was sticking in it - it was round & very raised & did sort of look as if there might be something in her foot, at a deeper level that had caused a pocket of pus to form - though DD couldn't remember getting anything in her foot, neither could we, bar a Sea Urchin Spike on holiday 2 years earlier, but we thought we had got that at the time & figured that was too long ago any way Confused

Took her to GP who diagnosed pretty much exactly that - splinter/glass etc causing pocket of infection & said to soak it in hot salt water twice a day to help draw it out - which we did - until the a few days later when DD fractured/damaged ligaments on same foot/ankle & ended up in a cast :(

The cast meant no more soaking in water, so we spoke with chemist & continued with magnesium sulphate paste to try & draw it out - still not working, neither did old sugar & soap poultice or honey & hot salty flannels etc

by this time we were back at the fracture clinic for a new cast & the Fracture Clinic Nurse had a look saying in her experience (RTAs etc) thats things always work their way out & usually take about 30 days, so we carried on with flannels & Mag paste & took her back to see another GP when after 5 weeks or so still no joy :(

Next GP agrees with first diagnosis, but gives us a Varruca treatment paint, saying to be extra careful with it as it wasn't a varruca , but the skin over the abscess was calloused so should help to break through -

We used this Sacylic Acid paint & after a few days a disc of hard skin did come away from the top, but it was leaving the skin around it very sore & inflamed, despite my using a magnifying glass to apply it, so as not to get it on the surrounding skin :( - as a result I didn't dare use it after top had come away for fear of hurting DD more

the last GP had said if this didn't work, then it would be minor surgery with Dr XXX - DD had FREAKED at this as she hates this particular GP as he's misdiagnosed her a couple of times, seriously so & she doesn't trust him at all & to be honest his manner with kids isn't good :(

So as we are already dealing with the hospital & this original "injury" is going to hamper her ankle healing as it was already causing DD walking problems, I speak with the fracture clinic who send her for a scan to see whats in it

at the Scan, the Doctor says it looks like a verruca to him - now the top has come of it sort of does, but I find it hard to believe that 2 GPS & A Nurse miss that Confused - but he does say GPs would have more experience in that - he tells me Scan is showing now obvious foreign body, but will send it back to Doctors for measurements & I will get results later

STILL WAITINGHmm - I've chased up the results with both DDs Physiotherapist - as its now hampering DDs progress & of course the main Fracture clinic Doctors secretary - over 2 weeks ago I was told it would be put on Doctors desk for his urgent attention - thats 5 weeks in total now & it bloody hard to get through Hmm

Can someone who knows give any advice & does this sound as iif it may have been a Verruca after all

What do they look like when they start off??

Thank You :)

The dd's both have has veruccas that have started off by looking and feeling like a big splinter is wedged in the foot. It's never been as bad as you describe, and has withing a couple of weeks been clearly a verucca. If the scan says foreign body, then I'd be inclined to believe that.

My dc have all had large splinters that have run into the foot and not really noticed (or wanted to stop playing) until later. Usually at bedtime... no just after lights out Wink So I wouldn't go on the basis that you don't know when it could have been done.
