how old is she?

a comic goes down well and dependent on age a new soft toy - often hospitals have them for sale in aid of charity at a low price (well, ours does).

It's scary, isn't it. Do you have anyone else around to support you? Friends/ family really important at such times

PotteringAlong · 18/11/2011 15:29

I'm so sorry :( has she had her operation? How old is she?

fuzzypeach1750 · 18/11/2011 15:30

Aww bless her Sad and you Sad. Very scary especially when you are alone. Colouring book if she's young enough? Word searches? A small board game? Yummy snacks to encourage her to eat, something nice to drink. Don't forget about you too. You need bits to pick at when you feel that you can manage it. Just lots and lots of cuddles. Hope she's home and on the mend soon. Smile

fuzzypeach1750 · 18/11/2011 15:31

And don't worry, she will be fine and will bounce back so quickly.

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 15:33

Favourite bear? I know she's 12 but I'm guessing they still want them....

PotteringAlong · 18/11/2011 15:42

Nice pj's (could you afford to get new ones as a treat? Primark have cheap ones).
cuddly toy (never too old!)
Chocolate
iPod?

spendthrift · 18/11/2011 15:46

A very little cheap make up case? and some squash/something to drink (not fizzy). Those puzzle books that have wordsearches, sudokus and other mind games. Check with the nurses about food.

Good luck. She'll prob be worried about you, so make sure you tell her how you are doing fine. But does your hospital allow you to stay in over night? Ours does, free, until the child is no longer 12. Worth asking if you want to do so.

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 15:49

mine wont let me stay :( :( going to primark on way to see her get her some pjs
take make up, ipod, puzzles and teddy!!
the school phoned and are sending her some work so taking that..

Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 15:51

Ah shame you can't stay. Make sure she has change if she wants to call you

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 15:53

shall i take her mobile? she can text me and phone me. that may be easier than change?

OP posts:
Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 15:55

Yes, but check if they are allowed to use it on the ward. As long as she has a method of speaking to you whenever she wants

gameoldbird · 18/11/2011 15:57

yes, take her mobile then she has the security of being able to contact you any time. Take a girlie magazine...gosh, I am showing my age by suggesting Jackie (prob no longer exists) but something like that. The main problem will be boredom, I suspect. A kindle is a fab idea if you have one. As you know, you can buy all sorts of children's classics for very little money.

I hope she is home soon :-) So glad the op went fine xx

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 15:58

mum1639, i will. am just on way to see her now. will take evreything ( in hollister bag- she said yesterday she wanted it when we were on the way to a&e if she had to stay there!) Thank you

OP posts:
gameoldbird · 18/11/2011 15:59

Yes, if she is NOT allowed to use the mobile then make sure she hides it well but still has it - as long as she does not disturb other children on the ward, there is not scientific reason not to use a mobile these days other than in intensive care and being alone in hospital can be frightening eg if nobody answers the bell (I know most nurses are angels, but there are some wards.......). Oh, and take some nice food.

giraffesCantDookForApples · 18/11/2011 16:04

hope she better soon

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 16:06

phone can be used!
her grandma just left - took her 2 pots of her amazing hotpot - jealous !!!!!!!!!
Also, surgeon been to see her and said that the appendix had burst which was why she was in so much pain. Had a visit from her best friend who told her that everyone was missing her loads and basically that there form tutor says not to hurry back. good as told 2-3 weeks to stay off school. Got to stay in hospital for a week so a week or two off then.

I had mine out (at 19) and remember that you can feel really sick the next day, I actually was quite sick and didn't feel like eating anything for the first 24 hrs (but recovered really quick after that) - so just things that will make her a) Comfy b) Less bored c) Less scared - you appear to have it covered !! Phone, teddy, entertainment - and just lots of visiting as often as you can, and make sure everything is in easy reach - you can't pull yourself up for a bit - so everything needs to be on the bedside table, rather than in it!!

Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 16:13

...and get well soon to her, and try not to worry yourself

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 16:21

will send her your wishes. she says she feels like she has been hit by a train :(

Also, how long before she should start doing things again? she has 3 milestones from school which have to be done before tuesday and her mate says she will hand them in if she can do them. I don`t want her to do them until the doctor says is ok.

OP posts:
supermama212 · 18/11/2011 17:27

back after visiting her. She says she has never felt so ill :(
The doctor spoke to me and basically told me that she will stay in hospital for 10 - 12 days as it had ruptured and she is suffering side affects from the GA.
Was sick when i was there - is that an after effect of the op or anesthetic?
I hope she gets better :o

Sparklingbrook · 18/11/2011 17:37

Is it the norm that parents can't stay? My two are 12 and 9 so presumed that if they were ever in hospital we could stay over. Is there an age limit? DS2 had an op as a baby and DH stayed.

Get well wishes to your DD super.

Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 17:42

I was physically sick a lot after the op - don't think it was the anaesthetic as I'm normally ok with that. But mine hadn't ruptured. She will be poorly for a bit, but once she starts to feel less sick, you do feel better fairly swiftly. However, as it's an operation and they have cut through your stomach muscles it does take a long time to be able to sit up and even walk for a short distance without getting out of breath or tired / achy. I wouldn't ask anything of her at all - no school work, nothing. I really don't think she will be able to do them - but the school know that she is in hospital, sure they will be able to give her some leeway.
It's really hard on you that you can't stay - is there really no way ? Hopefully she will get a good rest tonight and feel a bt better in the morning. It's just time I'm afraid

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 17:54

sparkling i am in york. the age limit here is 12.

mum she is asleep already she texted me and told me that i am going to bed now. that was 5.30!!!! i have taken the school work home again after the Dr. said no way he has written a letter to send with her friend prohibiting her doing any!
trouble is , she is at a private school which her dad pays for and he is annoyed that his money is still being paid even though she is not there, also they are strict re work as they are top of the table here. Hopefully , they will give her some leeway.

she cannot sit up at the moment - too week to lift a spoon!

I think i need Wine!
