DS1 is 12 and would be horrified at being left in hospital. You DD sounds a bit more grown up.

How are you feeling super? what time can you go back in the morning?

Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 18:01

You deserve a glass of wine or 3 !!! Her Dad has to realise that his daughter has been extremely lucky. A burst appendics can be fatal if they do not get it in time, and they obviously got it in time and she is on the road to recovery. School fees just have to be paid, regardless of whether they are there or not - but he really shouldn't be focussing on that - it's just one of those things. They will give her leeway, they can't do anything else - she'll get back and catch up and it will be fine. Please don't worry yourself about these things, they will just work themselves out.

Sorry to hear about your DD Supermama I had mine out a couple of years ago and it is very painful, and i was also sick, i think from the trauma and from the anaesthetic. I really don't think she should be doing any homework regardless of it being due in Tuesday.

Has she started her periods? I came on whilst in (a week too) and i wasn't even due so if she has bring some pads etc in for her. My mum also read to me (i'm in my mid 30s and i loved it, felt comforting). How about an ipod so she can listen to music.

I wish her a speedy recovery and hope you manage to get some sleep tonight too x

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 18:10

sadly, my DD had to grow up fast :( sparkling
I can go back at 9:00 too long to wait!!!
We don`t contact me and her father mum I had a phone call just 20 minutes ago from her doctor and he says that she needs a CT scan as he saw the referral for her eyes and sen (poss) and he wants one of her brain.
One thing leads to another. that scheduled for tomorrow so luckily that is moving fast! Thank god! off for some wine now then watching children in need

My dd had a burst appendix aged 5. She was admitted to hospital on christmas day and was in for 12 days. The thing she wanted most was a blanket from home.

She didn't have the op to remove it until about 16 months later. She recovered very quickly. She was home the next day and back up on her feet the day after that.

Hope your dd get better quickly, she sounds very mature.

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 18:25

supermama - a friend's dd had her appendix out last year when she was and I'm sure she was allowed to stay - that was in York. If you want to stay, ask again

spendthrift · 18/11/2011 23:26

Poor poor you and her - but thank heavens they got to it when they did. The anaesthetic will affect different people differently and her being sick so soon may well be caused by that. She'll almost certainly be on antibiotics so be prepared for them making her feel a bit off colour too.

Audio books a really good idea, also have you thought of little note cards, pens, colours and a pad, so that she can draw and also write notes to her friends?

If she likes crafts, take her some of those to make, a jig saw and a tray to do it on (preferably one of those ones with a squishy back) are good if you're a jig saw person. If you're going to be with her for some time, how about a pack of cards and/or a game?

once she can stretch to do her hair, some pretty hair things. you can feel pretty sticky, so wet wipes are sometimes a good idea, and tissues too. The hospital ones are very unsoft! Nail polish?

Have a good relax if you can and hope she feels a bit better in the morning.

supermama212 · 19/11/2011 07:24

Hope she is feeling better soon,if her father pays the insurance part of the fees, usually about £20 a year (often just on bill and only not pay if you opt out)he will get the fees back providing she is off for 5 days plus.He needs to contact the bursar,I got a week back last year for ds

supermama212 · 19/11/2011 07:54

mrs will tell him that. thank you.
Will pop back later am off to visit dd

Glad she is feeling a little better and pleased things are moving quickly for you. Baby steps Smile

Northernlurker · 19/11/2011 11:25

Did you ask about staying again? Yes it was that hospital.

supermama212 · 19/11/2011 15:02

northen i did ask but as she is 12 they deem her old enough to manage without me Angry she is my child i want to be there with her. don`t want to be disobedient and say i am staying though

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 19/11/2011 15:23

Interesting. I supect my friend (who is v assertive not to mention bloody minded Grin) must have simply said 'I'M STAYING' then. See how you get on but if you feel you shouldn't leave then be v clear that you are staying. I'm sure your dd is doing fine but the nursing staff need to take care of your well being as well.

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2011 15:29

DS1 (12) would be distraught at being left in hospital. 12 year olds can be very different in terms of maturity. I don't think it's right to have an age limit-it all depends on the child.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/11/2011 15:31

supermama - if you want to stay you need to put your foot down and tell them that you are staying. You are your child's advocate and she needs you there.

I've stayed in hospital many times with my child - she was 16 the last time and have never been told I couldn't stay by the bedside, except when in ITU and some HDU units.

Get some advice from PALs at the hospital.

libelulle · 19/11/2011 15:32

Your poor DD, and poor you. I think its insane that they don't allow you to stay with a 12 year old. That's really young. Even at 34 I wanted my mum with me when I was in hospital!!! Don't feel bad about having followed the rules until now - it's not easy to challenge them - but if you possibly can, I would now stick your assertive and bloody-minded hat on and insist on staying!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/11/2011 15:59

The DoH National Standards Framework says

'You should be able to stay with your child if you want to throughout
the stay in hospital and given somewhere on the ward or nearby to sleep. You shouldn?t feel you are ?in the way? as you have an important role in helping to look after your child'

'Child' in this context refers to a young person up to the age of 18.

supermama212 · 20/11/2011 06:49

ohh. if Doh say 18 i am v well staying!!!
will send updates from phone so wording may be bad :o
can not stay 24/7 due to work but will be there rest of time.

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 20/11/2011 10:34

Go for it!

'I feel it is in my child's best interests that I stay with her. She has already been in hospital for some days and it is not appropriate for her to be alone forthis length of time. Please make all necessary arrangements to support my decision' Repeat as needed!

QOD · 20/11/2011 10:45

My DD is nearly 13 and I would insist on staying - she doesn't "do" sleepovers even ...
Yours sounds very grown up, how brave she is being.
Poor poppet.
Can she get internet access? Games on facebook and being able to "chat" online with her friends will keep her occupied.

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 10:50

I am so pleased other people feel the same. I thought I was being PFB (even at 12), but then I thought about it and if you are a child that is unwell you want your mum/dad/carer more than ever.

Good luck supermama hope DD is getting better.
