DD age 8 came home from school today hopping, and saying her toe was really sore - had a look and it's quite red and swollen by one side of her nail. The nail is not ingrown. She had no bump/knock at playtime. What could it be?? HAve put her to bed with bread poultice on it (!) but what to do tomorrow - ring GP in morning if no better??
Thanks :)

Athlete's foot is very common. Sometimes it feels very sore and sometimes it feels very itchy. Then you scratch it and it gets very sort again.

I have a little patch of it at the moment, usually it's between my toes but this time it's nearer the top of the toe.

Unless she has other underlying health problems/allergies I'd be inclined to try a bit of athlete's foot cream for 2-3 days, and/or show the pharmacist. They are very skilled at identifying sore skin and so on.
