Hi, can anyone advise, my dd is 10 mnths and I have noticed a lump next to her eye. If I pull the skin to the side it looks more prominent, not sure if it might be a cyst? It doesnt cause her any upset or pain but I'm wondering what it is? And should I be worried? Please help, thanks Smile

Dt1 gets styes quite often could it be that?

beautyguru · 24/10/2011 13:20

No its def not a stye cos I've had these myself and I know what they look like. Also its hard to explain where the lump is but its not directly next to eye its kind of under brown bone near outer corner of eye...where you would put eyeshadow if you were doing a winged effect is the only way i can explain it!!

I had a very large cyst as a child just beside my eye. It was a kind of hard lump that you could push around under the skin. It went away in my teens. It never hurt and actually no one ever noticed it but me.

However, I think I would talk to the GP about it (not HV as they wouldn't have sufficient knowledge to say).

Thanks Goosey, i will get her booked in..I cant tell if its hard or not as I dont want to press too hard in case I do hurt her...thanks again Smile

It could be a dermoid cyst. My son had one at the outer edge of his eyebrow, from birth. It did grow and became quite noticeable. It was removed when he was 3, through an incision in his eyelid (which left no obvious scar)

Hi Dweble, thanks for reply. Took her to Drs this morn and she has been referred to paediatric opthamology to get it looked at properly. The Dr agreed it was probably a cyst but because it has grown over the past 2 months from being barely noticeable to being a small pea size under the skin she said they may want to remove it or may just want to monitor it. Could be a couple of months before we get appointment through though Sad Will update this thread once I know x

Hi Guru,

Try not to worry while you are waiting for your appointment. It does sound like a cyst. If it changes drastically while you are waiting im sure your GP could get you seen sooner if need be.

Quite often long waiting times means its a good thing as the Dr's are not too concerned from what been described by your GP. If they were really worried they would get you in ASAP.

My DS had a dermoid cyst near his eye. I first noticed in at a few weeks old and was told by GP to keep an eye on it and it would probably disappear. I went back when he was 1 as it hadn't disappeared and the GP said he would check again in 6 months. He then felt it had grown and referred us to a plastic surgeon! He told us it would need to be removed but that there was no urgency so we opted to wait a couple of years, although it hindsight having your child go through as op is no easier aged 3 than aged 1!
However it is a very minor op, although does involve a general anasthetic. and we were able to take him home an hour after surgery finished. The operation is usually carried out for cosmetic reasons, but there is a danger that they can suddenly grow very large in adulthood if left unoperated (and I have since heard of that happening to someone) but dermoid cysts are benign lumps so there is no risk to your DDs health and a few years later my DSs scar has virtually disappeared - certainly no one who didn't know it was there would notice it.
