Electric toothbrushes for toddlers?

I'm finding it really hard to brush my 21 month old DS's teeth - he refuses to have the toothbrush in his mouth at all sometimes. I use an electric toothbrush, and he loves this and is always trying to get me to use that for him instead of his toothbrush. I looked at getting one for him, but they all say not for children under the age of 4.

Does anyone know why? Are they bad for them for some reason, or is it a legal health and safety type thing that will be fine as long as I'm supervising?

We use this one for our son who just turned one: www.mothercare.com/dp/B001O18S9Y?ref=sr_11_1. He likes it, but he has liked having his teeth brushed since the first one came through.

I use our electric oral b toothbrush for my DD1 who is 2.5. The toothbrush comes with a special head that has soft bristle for kids. i figure it wont do any harm as long as she is supervised. Brishibg her teeth doesnt last long either at the moment.

DS has one a bit like this and loves it. It's not as whizzy-fast as my electric toothbrush and he loves switching it on himself.

Sticker charts have worked quite well for DS with teeth cleaning from about 21mo-ish and also brushing his teeth at the same time as us doing ours.

DS has used one since about 18months with a soft bristle head, and supervision, obv.

Electric toothbrushes aren't recommended for children due to the speed they go at - even with a soft brush, they can damage enamel. There are load of battery powered brushes around for kids.

Thank you everyone Smile
I've bought him a battery one (grinding my teeth at the impossibility of finding one that wasn't either Barbie or a superhero...), and he's delighted!
