Mouth ulcers

ds who is 3 has been getting quite big and painful mouth ulcers a few times over the past few weeks.
Is this something I should take him to the dr for?
I haven't really heard of young children getting them before and am slightly concerned it might be a sign of something else being wrong? Anyone know?

I would take him, it sounds too frequent to me.
has he just started preschool? that or the start of cold season could make him more prone to them.
