10 yr old ds's ear is weeping slightly- no pain - should I send him to school tomorrow?

My ds had earache all Saturday evening - the pain has gone now but his ear is weeping very slightly so I suppose he's got some sort of infection. I hope to send him to school tomorrow and take him to the doctor in the evening - What would you do?

I think you should take him in the morning poor thing. He needs antib's.

And i say this as my DD is a regular sufferer and is on antib's now for another ear infection. She had a raised temp (even though didn't feel hot) and the pain has gone because the pressure build up has been released. It doesn't mean he is any better.

I would take him to the doctors first thing in the morning before school tbh.

Has he banged his head?

less of the poor thing Nicknacks - he's sitting beside me here in otherwise blooming health delighting at the prospect of a day off school. I in the meantime have the boss from hell to have to deal with tomorrow if I don't go in to work.

I'm quite hard on my kids about making them go to school but anything like that I would be cautious. (Been on too many 1st aid courses and heard way too many grim tales!!)

You may not need the day off. Get to the doctors for as soon as it opens and ask for an emergency appointment. The doctors around here open at 8.00am.

Have him in his school uniform. It could be a case of taking some anti- biotics and he could well be at school before the bell goes!!

Same here Makiko. DD is only 13 months but we are already being referred for hearing tests due to repeated perforations/infections. She has no speech so i am quite worried.

Maybe thats why it seems an overreaction to get him straight down the doctors. I hope you DS gets better soon.

No idea on the ear thingy, I would be inclined to go in after work if I had boss from hell but current job more flexible. I've sent my DS in to school with antibiotic liquid medicine once and was so completely appalled at the suggestion that I come in at lunch time (absolutely not possible to do this and go to work with boss who would not understand), so I gave the medicine to DS (aged 4 or 5) and told him to pour it on a spoon and take it at lunch time. The office staff then mentioned that someone could supervise and make sure he took it and took it home! I assume then that not giving medicine to children really means they can't put it in their mouths but can pour it out.

Definitely get it treated - I have permanent hearing loss in one ear due to a childhood ear infection that didn't get treated in time.

NickNacks, my ds had ear infections every 2 weeks from 3 months onwards. He had his first set of grommets at 20 months and stopped having them until the grommets came out. His speech vocabulary also majorly improved withing the month of getting them, although he's now under SALT for pronunciation.
I can recommend them.
