Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

How is everyone coping with the cold weather?

Chrysanthemum5 · 12/12/2012 17:00

Well DS is back at school today, but I've asked for him to stay indoors at breaks. It's very cold here, and quite damp so going from that environment back into a warm classroom really sets off his coughing. How is your DS

Sirzy · 12/12/2012 17:09

He isnt too bad, coughing nicely this evening though.

Chrysanthemum5 · 12/12/2012 17:19

Yes DS is determined to go to cubs this evening so I may have to stay for a while and see how he's doing with all the running around

alibobins · 12/12/2012 22:09

Ds1 is struggling with the cold he is coughing and wheezing away :( his sats are 94 think another trip to the gp isin order.

cedmonds · 13/12/2012 11:34

He is ok thanks alli . He is doing full days at school as there are loads of things going on. ?He is exhausted and pale but not to bad The cold weather doesn't help though.

Sirzy · 15/12/2012 09:17

DS had an attack last night, one big enough I was starting to think about A and E but it calmed down. This morning he is back to normal though so no idea what caused it. Digging the pram out for today though!

alibobins · 15/12/2012 18:36

Sirzy how is your ds this morning? Poor you and poor him :(

Sirzy · 15/12/2012 19:17

He has been more tired and grumpy than normal but otherwise not to bad. Just gone to bed so hopefully a nice peaceful night!

Chrysanthemum5 · 15/12/2012 22:00

Sirzy sorry to hear that hope you DS has a restful night

alibobins · 16/12/2012 11:24

How is everyone else?

Hi
Can I join?
DD was admitted for 14 (!) nights at 5 months old with RSV/bronchiolitis.
NG tube, CPAP etc.

Then struggled on and off for nearly 18 months, being admitted for several days every 3/4 months, basically whenever she had a cold. Finally called an ambulance to the house one day when she deteriorated very very quickly, and they was talking about ventilating her on the way to the hospital Sad, as she was blue and saturating at below 80 O2, paramedics kept shacking their heads saying "that can't be right?"!

Any way after that they finally diagnosed her and added the Montelukast and Clenil rather than just the Sabutamol, I was handed over to a great asthma nurse and we have not been admitted for 12 months! A couple of "visits to A&E for a neb, but not since early in the spring, just managed to avoid a trip following a cold, but managed to deal with it at home with the Sabutamol.

I wish I would of found this thread 2 years ago though!

Sending best wishes for any wheezers ATM.

Sirzy · 16/12/2012 20:39

Hi!!

Sounds very similar to my DS history, glad you finally have a diagnosis and well done and making a year with no admissions! :)

alibobins · 16/12/2012 20:47

Hi a lot of us on this thread started off with very similar stories Sad
Glad you have managed a cold without admission.

Sirzy · 17/12/2012 10:46

Just had the allergy test results and he showed no notable reaction to the allergens they tested for which is a relief. So it seems it's illness, weather and exercise which triggers him - all things which are hard to control for but at least we are getting a better picture now

Chrysanthemum5 · 17/12/2012 11:19

Sirzy that's good news about the allergens, sounds like your DS has similar triggers to mine.

Was raging with one of the other mums at school who was talking about how her DD had been up all night coughing, and being sick but she'd sent her in to school as she wanted to go to Sainsbury's! I was so shocked I couldn't really think what to say, but I was mad. It may just be a cold to her DD, but it could mean more steriods or a hospital admission to my DS. Any great ideas for what to say in that situation in future?

alibobins · 17/12/2012 12:37

Sirzy good news about the allergy tests. Ds1 has so many allergies and makes his treatment plan so much mire complex.

Sirzy · 19/12/2012 17:26

Those who's little ones are on seritide what dose do they have?

alibobins · 19/12/2012 18:36

Ds1 has been on seretide since he was 4 and he's on 125 two puffs twice a day.

cedmonds · 19/12/2012 18:58

Ds is on 125 two puffs twice a day
Chrusanthemum i know what you mean i haven't yet found anything to say. some one brought there child to school after being sick all night saying they were fine. That child vomited all over an other child at lunch that day. It makes me so cross
HOw is everyone else getting on.
