Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

We were discharged late thursday evening apart from looking like a skeleton ds2 is so much better just got to build him back up now the dietician is ringing Monday

Badvocsanta · 08/12/2012 11:05

Sirzy...he has had 2 x 3 day courses of prednisilone and am reluctant to give him more as they don't really seem to help :(
The gp we saw last week said they won't dx him til he is 5? Is that right? I am sure ds1 was dx before then!
We have bought a humidifier today as steam seemed to help a bit last night.
Thanks for replyi

Sirzy · 08/12/2012 11:08

Ds was diagnosed at 12 months so they can but they are reluctant to do so.

However, even if they won't diagnose they can still treat the asthma symptoms

Badvocsanta · 08/12/2012 11:10

Have 2 more days of prednisilone in the cupboard.
Will give them this weekend and take him back to docs next week.
Sigh...I know what they will say...viral cough, can last 6 weeks, can't dx him yet...blah balh

I bought some print on the other day but haven't tried it yet.
Ds1 had montelukast when he was younger. Didn't really make a difference to him tbh but glad it has for your ds.
What really worked for ds1 wa SA profilaxtic AB during the winter.
Huge difference.

Sirzy · 08/12/2012 17:00

Bugger. Ds is coughing and wheezing and is starting to feel rather warm. Fingers crossed its nothing

Badvocsanta · 08/12/2012 17:01

Hope it's nothing sirzy x

cedmonds · 08/12/2012 17:03

Sirzy · 09/12/2012 14:00

Oh no Ali!

Ds seems perky this morning, the temp has gone but still a bit chesty

lollipoppi · 10/12/2012 10:31

Hello all, hope your all ok and little ones are keeping well?
DS is ok at the moment ......... Touch wood! X

alibobins · 10/12/2012 11:52

Lolli glad things seem settled.
Sirzy hopefully the new meds will carry on doing a super job :)
Ds2 is back to his normal cheeky self just in time for his birthday tomorrow, however ds1 had an attack this morning I was able to sort him at home but I was all ready to phone 999 as it took a while for him to calm down and the ventolin to start working. He is in with the gp at 3 for a check

cedmonds · 10/12/2012 13:21

Alli they seem to take it in turnsSad hope he is OK. Ds is still plodding on ok he seems a bit coldly so we will see.

alibobins · 10/12/2012 15:44

Gp gave him 3 days worth of pred his sats were 92 so he wants to see him again tomorrow Sad
Cedmonds they really do take it in turn dd has got a rare auto immune condition too so has chemo and numerous other meds.

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2012 18:13

Hope everyone is ok, and that this winter is not too bad for us all.

DS just back from GP with a dose of steroids and antibiotics as he got a cold which has gone to his chest. At least it's the school holidays soon!

Sirzy · 10/12/2012 19:34

Blooming heck Ali, you have your hands full then! Hope they give you a nice, healthy christmas!

DS is the same as your DS cedmonds. Keeps threatening to start something but its not developed yet, knowing him it will wait until next week which is full with christmas parties and plays!

Chrysanth - hope your DS is better soon

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2012 19:42

Thanks Sirzy the steroids usually work pretty well I just hate having to give such a dose to him. And previous antibiotics have stripped the enamel off his teeth so that's not great! Overall though just trying to be grateful that when he needs help the nhs is there to provide it. Don't want to end up in hospital with him again (although he says hospital food is delicious!)

Ali you've got a lot on your hands hope things get better

Sirzy · 10/12/2012 19:45

I know what you mean about the steorids, I hate having to give them to DS but know they only give them when he really needs them. Thankfully he has gone 2 months without needing any which makes a nice change

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2012 19:52

Yes Sirzy I know he really needs them. DS is 8 how old is your DS?

Sirzy · 10/12/2012 19:56

He was 3 last month

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2012 20:04

Just caught up with some of the previous posts Sirzy, did you get your GP to give you what the consultant suggested? Our GP is fairly poor in terms of his bedside manner, but he is good at identifying when DS needs medication. He was the one who gave us a steroid inhaler for use when he gets a cold, and that's kept the worst at bay

I see you DS was diagnosed at a year, it's good you got that so early.

Sirzy · 10/12/2012 20:08

Yes eventually, I ended up phoning the consultants secretary who got the consultant to phone the GP and sort it!

it was a relief to get the proper diagnosis, he had been treated as asthmatic from about 6 months but they confirmed it when he was just over 1 and had pnumonia (again!)

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2012 20:15

Well, glad they listened in the end!

Sirzy · 11/12/2012 09:29

Happy birthday to your DS Ali
