Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

Ds1 is very tight and wheezy he's been up most of the night. If its not one it's the bloody other.
Cedmonds how can school say leaving at lunch will disrupt the class! Surely a poorly wheezy child causes more disruption. I'm so cross on your behalf.
December is usually a bad time for ds1 we have spent so many nights on the ward this is the first winter without azithromycin in a few years it is on repeat so if he gets too bad we can put him back on it.
Hope the forecast snow stays away this weekend

cedmonds · 30/11/2012 18:45

Ds was ment to stAy at school all day but he got sent home at lunch

Sirzy · 30/11/2012 20:17

Ali, hope he is ok now x

Cedmonds, hope DS feels ok and you manage to sort the school out x

I have had yet another argument with the GP today who won't prescirbe what the consultant has told him to. Hopefully get it sorted on monday, thankfully I always reorder with 2 weeks left!

alibobins · 01/12/2012 08:03

Ds1 is still tight so gp started him on pred and said use the nebuliser before bed to see if it helped. Ds1 slept better but is still catching his breath and wheezing today so going to give another neb.
Hope everyone has a good weekend Smile

TSC Shock. I'd call up the consultant's secretary and book an appointment. Absolutely agree that his asthma is not being managed.

Found out that DD1's school are giving her the inhaler before PE despite me telling them that someone needs to help her with it. Grrr. But fairly insignificant considering all the children here being hospitalised... Sad

Sirzy · 04/12/2012 15:39

I am currently trying to get hold of the consultants secretary to sort out the GPs muck up with the inhalers. The Gps suggestion of "I will prescribe the old one instead" isn't quite good enough!

Sirzy · 04/12/2012 15:45

Tsc - if the Gp won't refer next time he is admitted ask them to refer that way. When DS was moved to his current consultant he came to see him on the ward did the inital consultation there and then arranged a follow up a month later.

Is the Asthma nurse through the hopsital or your GP? Perhaps phone her and ask her about a refferal?

Bless him. DS has just woken up coughing and wheezing, went in and asked him if he was ok and was told "haler please mummy" had his 3 puffs then he said "thank you" rolled over and went back to sleep! Seems to have worked too as he is coughing less now!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 05/12/2012 12:27

weird about no referral, although now that I think about it, our GP was the one who referred DD1 despite her being a frequent flyer in A & E. The A & E consultant prescribed her Seretide and referred her to the Children's Hospital asthma nurse, but not the consultant for some reason?

Sirzy · 06/12/2012 10:55

TSC - did you manage to arrange a refferal?

At least you have got him under hospital care thats a start! I know our hospital will only refer to the respritory pead if the really need to as he is so busy hence our appointment being rearranged again!

I finally have the right inhalers for DS AND they have been put on repeat. His antihistamine isn't on repeat yet but surely the GP can't argue prescribing that!

alibobins · 06/12/2012 11:36

Tsc glad you are finally in the system we was really lucky with ds2 as ds1's consultant saw us on the ward when ds2 was 3 weeks old with broncholitis and agreed to see him with ds1. He us a fantastic consultant and will often ring us at home to see how both boys are getting on.
Sirzy my gp's have just questions the repeat for ceterizine asking if they really need it all year!!
I'm currently waiting to be discharged from hospital with ds2 who has been really poorly with mesenteric adenitis and ended up on a drip Sad thankfully his asthma is under control all the nurses commented on how good his chest wasSmile

Sirzy · 06/12/2012 11:42

That sounds painful Ali hope he is better soon xx

cedmonds · 06/12/2012 12:41

Glad you are in the system STC
Ds is at home as school have only got half the heating working and it's freezing in there. He was up a bit tight chested and I think it's because he was there yesterday. He seems better today but is very tired. Hope you come out of hospital soon alli.

Sirzy · 07/12/2012 19:39

Cedmonds - hope your DS is ok

Hope the cold weather isn't causing too many problems for our LOs.

I hope you don't mind me joining?
Ds2 is 4 and really struggling ATM...my dh and elder boy are asthmatic and it's looking like ds2 is too.
He has had a cough now for over a month...ended up in hospital in July with similar but his sats are ok and no temp at the moment.
But the coughing! :(
He is coughing til he retches / is sick. Is this normal?? He was bad 2 weeks ago and we took him to the walk in centre and he got ABs and ventolin but they haven't really helped and tonight he is as bad again.
Any tips? Advice?
So hard to see him suffer....:(

Sirzy · 08/12/2012 10:08

Tsc - hope he is better soon x
