Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

Oh dear Ali, hope he is ok, keep us updated x

DoubleYew · 08/11/2012 22:46

Sorry to hear that ali.

There is so much for me to learn. Thanks to google images I see we have the aerochamber one. Thing is I don't think he's getting any of it atm as he just thrashes and shakes his head as soon as I squirt it. HV has told me to lie him on the floor on his back and clamp his head between my knees. Paed just says he has to get used to it so he can use the blue one in an urgent case. But I'm not sure whether to do it in his sleep, as then atleast he'd be getting some meds - but not getting used to using it. Any thoughts on what is more important? Thanks for the advice btw.

shelsco · 08/11/2012 23:00

Really sorry to hear that Ali. Hope he's ok and you mange to stay out of hospital, though I know that won't be likely. what allergy testing is ds having sirzy? ds has just come out of hospital after overnight stay for severe allergic reaction. There is some debate about whether the asthma symptoms were triggered by the panic of the reaction or whether they were part of the reaction. Think he is going for skin prick testing as follow up.
Double yew my ds hated normal spacer but did prefer aero chamber. We played lots of games with teddies, making exaggerated noises breathing in and out etc and that did help a bit. though wasn't fantastic, it did mean some of his meds were getting to him!

lollipoppi · 09/11/2012 09:08

How you doing Ali?
Double my DS used to scream the place down at first and we would both end up in floods of tears, but eventually he got used to it and has no problem taking it now. I suppose it's a bit like getting them to brush their teeth, not something they enjoy at first but really important it gets done!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/11/2012 11:38

ali hope no news is good news?

DoubleYew · 09/11/2012 12:06

Thank you lollopoppi, that has given me some hope.

alibobins · 09/11/2012 18:55

We are in hospital ds2 is so poorly and no body can find out why Sad it's not his asthma this time he is on a drip not eating or drinking just sleeping all the time he is on a waft of oxygen just as he is so sleepy Sad
Most of the bloods have come back okay they are talking about doing a lumber puncture if he is no better tomorrow Sad

Sirzy · 09/11/2012 18:56

Oh no ali :( Hope they manage to find out what it is soon x

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/11/2012 19:20

Sad so sorry Ali, hope they get to the bottom of it.

cedmonds · 09/11/2012 19:50

Oh no alli hope you get to the bottom of it.Sad
As with spacers ds used to scream having it when he was younger. The peads said he just had to have it and it was a case of pinning him down and giving it to him it was horrid. Still have to do it with nebs sometimes now. Not goood at 3am as he wakes the whole ward. Hmm What did help ds is covering the spacer with stickers and pretending it was a elephants trunk.

shelsco · 09/11/2012 20:55

Thinking about you Ali. Hope they find out what's going on soon.

Sirzy · 09/11/2012 20:56

Cedmonds, DS is the same with Nebs he is fantastic with inhalers but awful with nebs.

lollipoppi · 09/11/2012 21:15

Oh no Ali, thinking of you x

BeaWheesht · 09/11/2012 21:49

Hope ds is ok Ali - if it's any consolation ds did exact same but was only 3 wks and wouldn't wake etc - never did find out what caused it but he was ok

alibobins · 10/11/2012 07:23

Still no change Sad the only thing that has come back abnormal is his ammonia levels so they are pushing more fluids and going to retest later today.
He had a chest and stomach x/ray last night as one of the doctors thought they could feel something in his but it turned out to be his glands.
One of the nurses did say sometimes the body can just respond this way to a virus and no cause to be found don't know if she was just trying to make me feel better at 2am this morning Sad

BeaWheesht · 10/11/2012 11:48

I reckon what the. Nurse said is true - was for ds. Hope he's better today.

cedmonds · 10/11/2012 14:49

Hopee he is better today alli

Sirzy · 10/11/2012 18:02

Hope things are improving Ali x

All is good with DS at the moment, I am getting hopeful we have finally found a treatment plan which works! No ventolin for a week which is amazing!

DoubleYew · 10/11/2012 22:54

Hope he's doing better soon Ali, how worrying for you.

Thanks for the tip on the stickers, will try that tomorrow. Spent ages trying to coax him to use it tonight, ended up with pinning down and screaming and crying.

alibobins · 11/11/2012 08:29

Well some improvement ds2 woke for about half an hour at 4 this morning Smile no major tests have been done just daily bloods. The ammonia levels have returned to normal and apart from that they still just think he got so dehydrated that he's recovering the nurses have believe that he will just wake up and be like nothing has happened. His consultant has been to see him although we were admitted under the surgical team and he believes its his tonsils again poisoning him so ds2 is now officially on the waiting list to have them removed.

Dh is bringing ds1 and dd to see him today if that doesn't wake him nothing will.

Sirzy so glad to here things are starting to work for ds.

Sirzy · 11/11/2012 16:45

Glad he seems to be on the mend a bit Ali x

I spoke too soon yesterday as he has been a bit wheezy today but 3 puffs of ventolin has done the job so I can cope with that!

alibobins · 12/11/2012 17:35

We are still in Sad ds2 is slowly improving still no cause to be found Sad

Sirzy hope ds is better today x x

Sirzy · 13/11/2012 07:08

At least he is improving Ali, hope you get home soon x

DS seems ok thankfully

Ds2 has woke up this morning asking for breakfast he's not eaten it but won't let anyone take his rice crispies away Grin he is sleepy watching fireman Sam his temp spiked in the night so he is being given antibiotics for 48 hours if he is okay after and drinking we can come home Thursday.
