Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

Ye 2 weeks. He is asleep on me now so going to put him to bed soon and hope he is better in the morning

lollipoppi · 05/11/2012 17:15

Fingers crossed!

I'm totally freaking out today, I'm due dc2 in 11 weeks and I've had a total panic about what would happen if DS has to go into hospital and I have a newborn!?
I have lots of help and support but I've never left DS in hospital, not even with DP (over protective mum alert Grin)
I literally did not sleep thinking about it last night and now I'm panicking about ds2 having a similar problem (hereditary) Sad

Sirzy · 05/11/2012 17:19

Hopefully he doesn't end up needing to go in so it doesn't end up a problem! If it does happen I am sure he will be fine with his dad with him though x

lollipoppi · 05/11/2012 17:28

Hopefully! Will just have to cross that bridge if and when we come to it Smile

DoubleYew · 05/11/2012 23:46

Hi everyone.

Ds has been in hospital twice in the last month with his breathing and today he got prescribed brown inhaler for everyday and steroids for emergencies. He is also starting with another cold today.

I feel so new to this. He is 2.4 and has always been really healthy, this seems to have come from nowhere.

butterfingerz · 06/11/2012 10:54

We saw the consultant today, she said he is responding well to treatment and looks healthy (weight, height checked etc.) so we've been discharged from her clinic! She said because he's already with the allergy consultant, he's already 'covered' as it were. He is having quite a good spell, even got through a bad cold last week with no A+E or even GP. He managed to sneak one of their toy trains out of the clinic without me noticing so he's happy!

Sirzy · 06/11/2012 14:07

Hi double! Hope your lo is ok if you have any questions just ask between us we have way to much experience!

Butter - that's great :)

alibobins · 06/11/2012 15:31

Ds2 is now on more antibiotics Sad

Welcome to any new posters

BeaWheesht · 06/11/2012 16:31

Hi guys

Can I ask your advice? Ds is almost 6 is normally on clenil 100 - 2 puffs twice a day. He's had a bad cough for 6 days and on steroids since Sunday - still coughing a good bit and last dose of steroids was today. They have helped - on Sunday it was non stop coughing. Should I be worried? He's also been having his reliever inhaler obviously.

Also, he's been spooooop hungry on steroids but also complaining of sore tummy - normal?

DoubleYew · 06/11/2012 18:29

Thanks Sirzy, any magic way to make this all go away?

He has fallen asleep on me before his bath, clothes and daytime nappy still on. He's definately coming down with something.

Did/do you all find that every cold results in a bout?

cedmonds · 06/11/2012 18:57

bewheesht Ds is always hungry when he is having pred unless he is really ill and nothing will get him to eat. Might be worth taking him to GP to get checked out again.
Double hope he is OK. Ds tends to get worse when he has a cold and it does tend to lead to a chest infection as well but every child is different.
alli Hope he is better you have had a rough start to the winterSad
Ds is back on antibiotics for an infection and he is having pred again with nebs when he needs it. He o2 levels are at 93 at the moment any worse and i will be taking him in.

alibobins · 06/11/2012 19:18

cedmonds you've not had a good start either :(

cedmonds · 07/11/2012 14:51

Alli how is ds?

Sirzy · 07/11/2012 15:09

Ds hasn't had a cold yet which hasn't resulted in some sort of problem with his chest. He is prone to pneumonia though so that doesn't help!

nocakeformeplease · 07/11/2012 15:55

Hi there

Do you mind if I join you?

DS 3.9 has recently been diagnosed with what I guess would previously been called childhood asthma, but they are reluctant to label it given his age. It all started in May, three weeks after DD was born. He got a cold one day, which is not unusual at all for him, but overnight his breathing sounded a bit laboured so we too him to the OOH doctor who immediately blue lighted him to hospital, where he was later diagnosed with pneumonia. He was then admitted to hospital a further three times over the next four months with viral induced wheeze, although the symptoms were exactly the same as the first time, and always following a mild cold. They know him by name there now - luckily the hospital is only 10 mins down the road!

He is under a fantastic doctor at the hospital - unfortunately though he said that although 2/3 of children will grow out of it, his feeling is that DS will be in the 1/3 that don't :(. Obviously i really hope he is wrong this time.

DS has now been put on a preventer (2 puffs twice a day) which (touch wood) seems to be helping as has had two colds now that haven't developed into anything, but I am just getting a bit nervous with winter approaching.

Will go back and read through now, but look forward to getting to know you all and fingers crossed to an uneventful winter for us all.

Sirzy · 07/11/2012 15:56

Hi Nocake. Hope the medication carries on working, even if he doesn't grow out of it with the right medication it shouldn't cause too many problems.

BeaWheesht · 07/11/2012 16:11

Thank cedmonds - he doesn't seem too bad today - will see what tonight holds Hmm

Dd (2) has just been started on a blue inhaler for a viral wheeze too - sounds chesty and croupy all at once Confused

lollipoppi · 07/11/2012 19:33

Hi all, hope your all ok and hello to bea, double and nocake !
Ds seems to be getting through his current cold ok, this will be the first cold in 2 years he has had where we have just managed to control it with ventolin at home and no hospital visits!

lollipoppi · 08/11/2012 19:14

Need opinions on what you would do ...
DS had his appt with the consultant in October, all was well and the consultant booked us in again for end of december for a follow up due to the fact he is on new meds and its the winter months
Got home to a letter tonight to say "due to an alteration in clinic arrangements" it will not be possible to see DS as planned and a new appt has been made for March.
The consultant specifically said she wanted to see him in 3mths rather than 6mnts to see how he is getting on
Would you call and explain this to them or do you think I've received this letter at her request?

Sirzy · 08/11/2012 19:26

I would phone them and see if they can do anything a bit sooner personally. That is a long wait and I would bet the consultant knows nothing of it!

lollipoppi · 08/11/2012 19:34

Thanks Sirzy, i will give them a call tomorrow x

DoubleYew · 08/11/2012 19:41

Agree I would call and say that about wanting to see him re new meds. Worst that can happen is they say "No he's changed his mind, March is fine."

I have another qu. Does anyone's 2 or 3 yr old not use a spacer? Ds just had his brown inhlaer for today, let him play with it as directed by paed but he seemed happier taking it from the actual inhaler. But I know she said they can't do the proper breathes at his age.

Sirzy · 08/11/2012 19:45

I would persevere with the spacer, its the only way to know they are getting a proper dose at this age. Even for adults they are advised now (although I don't know any adults who use them)

What spacer do you have? Perhaps he would be better with one of the smaller aerochamber ones? I have only just persuaded DS to use the volumatic type but he never fussed with the aerochamber.

alibobins · 08/11/2012 20:46

Ds2 is so so poorly will update later :(

Sirzy · 08/11/2012 20:52

Oh no Ali sorry to hear that xx
