Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

Spoke to soon this morning. Trip to a and e and we now have some pred to add to his collection of medicine at the moment.

alibobins · 07/10/2012 14:53

Oh sirzy not again he seems to be having lots of pred lately hope the consultant has some ideas for you x x

ilovemydogandMrObama · 07/10/2012 15:06

sirzy Sad sorry. Has he seen a consultant before or is this the first appointment?

Sirzy · 07/10/2012 15:20

he has been under a consultant since he turned one. This will only be the 3rd time of him seeing this consultant though, he is an asthma and CF specialist and really good thankfully!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 07/10/2012 16:01

oooh, so is our consultant... Do we live near each other? if so, he is a fantastic consultant Smile

Sirzy · 07/10/2012 16:39

Are you in the north west?

cedmonds · 07/10/2012 19:52

Oh no sirzy hope he gets better soon.
Ds is doing really well at the moment he has still got the night time cough but is doing OK during the day.Smile
He has got an gastro appointment this week so hopefully we will get some answers on that side of things. He has also been put on the books for home tutor from school as he has missed so much.

alibobins · 08/10/2012 08:12

Sirzy hope ds had a settled night x x

Sirzy · 08/10/2012 08:38

He wasn't too bad, think he woke up 5 times but 2 of them were needing a wee!

Seems a bit brighter this morning :)

lollipoppi · 08/10/2012 08:52

Hi everybody,
Sirzy Your consultant sounds similar to DS consultant and I'm in the north west too!
DS still not 100% still on 6puffs but managed to space it out to 6 hourly yday so fingers crossed for today! X

butterfingerz · 08/10/2012 09:32

Hope your DS is settling down Sirzy, it's horrible that feeling of not knowing whether you're coming or going with asthma, whether they're having a good day or a bad day.

Has your DS had any allergy testing done?

Sirzy · 08/10/2012 18:23

Not yet. We are keeping a diary to see if we can find any pattern.

alibobins · 08/10/2012 21:18

Bloody ds2 has a really high temp no cough or wheeze but will see what tomorrow brings x

Sirzy · 08/10/2012 22:22

Hope he is ok Ali

alibobins · 09/10/2012 09:45

dribbleface · 09/10/2012 11:52

Hi all,

Popped on to the thread last year as DS1 (4) has asthma, will read through and catch up soon.

I'm sorry to all of you who have children suffering, hate the blooming autumn!

Can I ask a quick question? DS2 (1) just has inhalers prescribed for the second time in his life for a viral wheeze, not overly concerned, know what i'm doing with them etc. But I wonder if this is the beginning of asthma for him too? Both boys have excema, DS1 has allergies too. What do you all think? Are we likely to escaped asthma for him?

Sirzy · 09/10/2012 12:35

Hi dribble. It's hard to tell, if it's only a problem when he is ill then hopefully it will end up as just the viral induced wheeze.

Ali and cedmonds - hope they are better this afternoon

dribbleface · 09/10/2012 12:37

Thanks Sirzy, thinking back DS1 had bronchiolitis at 5 mths, but then wheezed pretty much constantly till 9 mths when my GP (old surgery, moved since!) finally listened to my concerns. He used to wheeze when excited/lauging etc. Fingers crossed its just going to be viral wheeze then.

alibobins · 09/10/2012 17:36

So so cross with school ds1 is now in year 3 and I've been in several times as his new teacher doesn't seem to notice when he is struggling or unwell Sad last week he told her he had a cough feeling that wouldn't go away and she didn't give him his inhaler he had a rough night.
Well today as soon as ds came round the corner I could tell something was wrong he looked awful pale and like he was going to keel over Sad I asked him what was wrong and he tried to say I can't breath but he couldn't even catch his breath Sad I sat him down gave him 10 puffs and took him inside it took another 10 puffs to stabilise him. He's been checked by the gp who gave steroids and told me to put him on his nebuliser before bed he is lay on the sofa looking dreadful.
I have never been so cross Angry and upset at the same time he said he felt like that since lunch. SadSad

Ds2 is still hot so obviously brewing some kind of bug x

Sirzy · 09/10/2012 17:48

Oh no that's awful! Hope you manage to get the message across

cedmonds · 09/10/2012 18:58

Oh now Alli hope they have got the message.Sad Its so frustrating when schools don't give them there inhalersAngry
Ds hasnt got of the sofa all day he slept all afternoon and is asleep in bed 2 hours early. He is saying his ears hurt as well as his chest.Sad
I can see him having grommets put back in. Out of interest how many children on here have ent problems as well? Apparently it is closely linked to asthma.Ds had grommets put in at two and his tonsils removed at 4.

alibobins · 09/10/2012 19:46

Ds2 see ENT for his ears and throat they are discussing removing his tonsils but as he is so little they not too sure x x
Ds1 is still breathless Sad I can't believe they let him get in such a state I nearly phoned 999 when I got him to the gp his sats were 92 but his heart rate was 145 poor thing x x

alibobins · 09/10/2012 19:46

Cedmonds hope your ds feels better soon dd had a horrible temp cough and throat bug last week Sad

cedmonds · 09/10/2012 20:10
