Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

the asthma nurse went in when ds first started as he suffers anaphylaxis too. He has got a care plan in place i'm going to discuss it with them tomorrow x I am also going to have words with ds1 when he feels better as god knows why he didn't ask for his inhaler. Do you think 7 is too young to have one in his pocket?

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/10/2012 20:34

ali, PM'ed you...

alibobins · 09/10/2012 20:45

Have replied x

butterfingerz · 09/10/2012 21:29

Ali, I'd be fuming with the school in your position, I hope you're going to have stern words with them.

DS is still settled but that's normal for him, his asthma tends to be more sporadic and unpredictable rather than a daily thing. But when it does come, we seem to end up in A+ E!

alibobins · 10/10/2012 12:41

Well it gets worse apparently ds was told to go to the office have his inhalers and have 5 mins away from the class. He had a wander but never made it to the office he just went back and sat in class :( surely some communication is needed what if ds had collasped on the way :( he has got inhalers in the classroom but he said he felt sick too so she thought he would be better going to the office.
My poor ds he said he felt dizzy like the room was moving I am so angry at them. He is still very shaky and not quite right this morning.
I am waiting for a call back from his teacher.

M44 · 10/10/2012 16:37

Can I join? My 14 yr old dd has just started steroids as she has had a cold and it is her worst time of year- autumn fungal spores. Her asthma has flared and it is so frustrating when you do everything right and up inhalers etc. Thank goodness we had a lovely GP who was just wonderful and kind and school have been really sympathetic too.....

Sirzy · 10/10/2012 20:52

Oh no Ali, sounds like the teacher needs some serious training! Did she get back to you?

Hi M44! Hope your DD is better soon.

DS still isn't right, off to the GP again tomorrow!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 10/10/2012 21:16

ali I think the only thing that will make the school actually treat the episode seriously enough is to report it to the board of governors as a child protection issue as he was put at risk. yes, it's great that it wasn't serious, but he really needs to have his inhalers in the classroom. DD1's inhaler is kept in a cute drawstring bag hanging off the white board.

Hope he feels better soon...

alibobins · 10/10/2012 21:34

I've got a meeting with the head and class teacher tomorrow afternoon the school do seem to be taking the matter seriously. Ds is nearly back to his old self which is good as he is having some surgery next week and I want him fit and well.
Sirzy I would ask the gp to bring his consultant appointment forward as it seems your ds is having a real rough time Sad x x

Sirzy · 10/10/2012 21:38

We have managed to get his appointment forward to the 1st November from mid december and they are going to contact us if any cancellations become available sooner.

Hope the meeting goes well!

cedmonds · 11/10/2012 09:25

Ds has ventolin in the class room and in the office and one in the bag that they take for trips etc.
I agree with ilove that you need to make the board of governors know. At school they took ds out for a walk whlist his asthma wasnt good and he was ment to be doing no pe etc with out his ventolin. I got a phone call asking to go and get him as he had had an attack and they were worried about him.
Sirzy thats good that they have moved the appointment he is so little to having that much pred etc.
Still waiting for ds 's appointment to be moved forward or for a phone consultation. He has got a horrid cold anlong with everything else and is back on pred and ventolin 10 puff every four hours.

alibobins · 11/10/2012 09:53

He has got an inhaler on the classroom so really don't understand why the reacher sent him out!! I've reprinted his care plan out and left a message for the asthma nurse to ring me x x
Cedmonds poor ds

cedmonds · 11/10/2012 10:56

Alli let us know how it goes today. xx
Ds is doing ok and is playing quietly.Lets hope he stays that way. He has only done two full weeks of school this term.

alibobins · 11/10/2012 16:20

School have made it an official complaint and put a new policy into place to ensure it doesn't happen again. It turns out ds was told off for something and worked himself up into a state causing the attack Sad the teacher was really apologetic and says she is well aware how serous it is and is really sorry.
They are going to look at other ways that ds can let them know he needs his inhaler as he can be very shy and nit want to make a fuss.
I am quite happy with the way the school has dealt with it and I will get a reply to the complaint in writing.

cedmonds · 11/10/2012 17:44

Glad its got sorted poor dsxx

gussiegrips · 11/10/2012 17:47

just found this thread - and am in the middle of burning cooking dinner. Will be back to witter on about wheezes.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 11/10/2012 19:08

ali when DD1 was too shy to ask for her inhaler, the asthma nurse at Children's Hospital developed a system of laminated cards that she could keep in her pocket that said, 'I need my inhaler...' which she could show the teacher at any time.

alibobins · 11/10/2012 20:22

ilove that sounds perfect I think we will make some together at the weekend :)

sirzy how is your ds?

DizzyHoneyBee · 14/10/2012 12:03

Do any of you get DLA for your child with asthma? A couple of years ago I found out that we could apply but I didn't because I didn't want him labelled as having a disability but I've just applied as we're struggling to make ends meet - I spend about 15% of my income on the gas and electricity and that's been over the summer when we haven't needed the heating on and before the price rises.
I feel very unreasonable to have applied to be honest.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 15/10/2012 13:22

I hadn't even thought of it tbh. Am thinking of the added costs which is guess are taking her back and forth to Children's Hospital every 6 weeks or so, and hadn't considered having to have the heat on because of her, but we do. And ensuring her room is clean and free of any potential triggers including carpet cleaning every month.

Thanks for the suggestion and will list all the things we do as a direct result of her asthma... Smile

lollipoppi · 16/10/2012 10:06

Hello everybody, how are you all doing?

DS has got hand foot and mouth, kindly passed on by his cousin, were still in quarantine Sad although a great excuse to get the heating on and keep him nice and warm out of this horrible weather!

We were due to see his consultant yesterday which we had to cancel, but luckily they have managed to fit us in again on Monday x

cedmonds · 16/10/2012 17:09

Hi
Ds is back at school, untill i got a phone call to go and get him.Sad They had forgotten to give me his lunch time ventolin and he was very tightAngryThey said it was not there responsibility and ds should have reminded them. He did and got told to come back latter. What is it with schools at the moment.

Sirzy · 16/10/2012 17:35

That's awful!

Ds is doing ok at moment. Good job I order his prescriptions early as the GP forgot to do the serevent and the pharmacist had ran out of clenil!

lollipoppi · 16/10/2012 17:48

That's terrible cedmonds!
Glad DS is ok sirzy, I also have to order way in advance as they never seem to have the montelukast in stock

Sirzy · 16/10/2012 18:00

We have never had trouble with that one (touch wood) but always have 2 weeks supply as back up!
