Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

Cedmonds we have got to pick up a peak flow from my gp's tomorrow they said it will help us decide when to start him on pred x

Sirzy · 05/10/2012 09:13

Ds is wheezy and phlegmy this morning. The receptionist at the GP is trying to find an appointment to get him checked but I don't like my chances!

alibobins · 05/10/2012 12:45

Hope u manage to see someone sirzy x

Sirzy · 05/10/2012 13:31

Not got in but he seems more settled now. Going to try to get him in Monday instead.

Managed to bring his consultant appointment forward 6 weeks so only 2 weeks to wait for that now!

alibobins · 05/10/2012 14:24

Fingers crossed he stays well x x it must be his birthday soon I'm sure he's a similar age to my ds2.
I've got to phone my consultant in 2 weeks to update him on how ds2 is doing and he's having a meeting this afternoon with the ENT regarding taking his tonsils out one is saying yes and the other wants to watch and wait x

Sirzy · 05/10/2012 14:44

Ye he is 3 in November. x

Sirzy · 05/10/2012 17:19

Doctors phoned with a cancellation so now have more antibiotics for another chest infection.

alibobins · 05/10/2012 17:48

How's does he cope with infection? Does he always end up in Sad

Sirzy · 05/10/2012 18:02

He normally ends up in or at least with an a and e trip. I am hoping that he manages this one at home though x

butterfingerz · 05/10/2012 18:56

My DS has been quite settled this week, enjoying it while it lasts!

He has a few teeth coming through which I think was bothering him a lot last week along with his cold... he was miserable and angry, clinging and throwing a tantrum every 5 mins.

The last few days he's been sleeping really well, very content during the day, and no wheezing or coughing.... I mustn't get too used to it I suppose!

Sirzy · 05/10/2012 19:12

butter Just enjoy it while it lasts!

Teething is horrible! x

ilovemydogandMrObama · 05/10/2012 21:42

sirzy Sad hope the anti biotics help!

Do any of your DCs have rhinitis? The consultant did notice it as her last appointment and said it was common with asthma. Am wondering what the treatment would be? She is snoring quite badly and it wakes her up...

alibobins · 05/10/2012 21:46

ilove ds1 has nasonex steriod nose spray not sure how much it actually helps though as he still snores and sniffs constantly.

alibobins · 06/10/2012 13:05

Sirzy how is your ds? X x

Sirzy · 06/10/2012 14:15

No different yet, still getting very wheezy nearly took him to A and E before but it calmed down thankfullly.

How is everyone else?

butterfingerz · 06/10/2012 16:56

Does anyone avoid giving their DC's cows milk and anything with it in? (can't remember if it's already been mentioned on this thread).

I think my DS would be ten times worse if we'd not identified cows milk as a trigger for his asthma/allergies. Especially things like biscuits with skimmed milk powder in, that stuff is evil! He can tolerate a little goats milk and is still breastfed. His eczema clears up nicely when he doesn't have any CM.

Even me, after suffering with rhinitis and itchy, watery eyes for a number of yrs, after switching the whole family to goats milk, it disappeared and it's such a relief! St Helen's goats milk is my favourite.

I've heard wheat is a common trigger for asthma too, but my DS is not a big fan of bread, pasta etc. He tends to eat more rice, potato, oats.

DS is still quite settled, not sure if it's because they increased the clenil from 2 puffs to 4 puffs a day... (prays that it lasts!).

ilovemydogandMrObama · 06/10/2012 17:32

butter it's an interesting question as DD1 has severe chronic asthma, but not dairy allergic, yet DS is severely allergic to cow milk (and soya) but doesn't have asthma Hmm.

Unfortunately there is no trigger for DD1's asthma... She even had an asthma attack in the middle of summer -- remember that one warm day in the summer Smile

DizzyHoneyBee · 06/10/2012 17:38

Marking my place on this thread, my youngest has asthma and my oldest and I have just recovered from/got a nasty chesty cough so I'm not feeling optimistic about the next week or so.

Sirzy · 06/10/2012 17:52

I am starting to think dairy makes DS worse, he doesn't have a great deal normally anyway (other than his yoghurt to have his montelukast so I can't really stop that!)

Hello Dizzy. Hope your youngest manages to avoid the bugs!

alibobins · 06/10/2012 19:03

Sirzy ds2 happily chomps on the montelukast tablet apparently it tastes like cherry x

Sirzy · 06/10/2012 19:11

We tried a few months back and I ended up wearing it! Will give him a few more months then try again!

Sirzy · 07/10/2012 09:15

Well fingers crossed it looks like DS may have turned a corner!

How is everyone else today?

DizzyHoneyBee · 07/10/2012 09:43

hi Sirzy
he's woken up full of it this morning so we're having a pj day with blankets and heated pads.
How are your little ones?
