Help! Temp going up not down.

DS is 12 months. Fine all day but didn't eat his tea, very unusual. Put him to bed at 6pm as I thought he was overtired and noticed he seemed a bit warm and his hands were shaking. This stopped after his milk so wondered if it was blood sugar/hunger making his hands shake. Took ages to go to sleep, no crying just whimpering. 8.30 his temp was 39.8 so gave him calpol. Midnight violently sick everywhere, gave him water and stripped the bed and he went back down. 1.30am more sick and temp 39.9. Don't know what to do. DH abroad and DD 2.8 asleep. I'm panicking he's getting hotter.

Call Nhs direct 0845 4647.

EmmaRoyd · 20/09/2011 02:40

Thanks, I'm not thinking straight. Called them, waiting for a call back. I've been stressing out thinking if I have to take him to a&e, would it be best to wake DD and take her with me or wake my next door neighbour and ask her to babysit. could kill dh right now.

Give him another dose of calpol and if you have it, ibuprofen. Strip him down to nappy and take him to a cool room, if you have a fan put it on.

bumbleymummy · 20/09/2011 10:51

How is he this morning Emma?

EmmaRoyd · 20/09/2011 16:05

Nhs eventually referred us to the out of hours doc as DS's hands were cold and a bit blue but doc phoned and didn't seem overly concerned as he was breathing ok. Still very poorly today but had a little food and water and kept it down. Hardest part is trying to look after him without DD kicking off.

:( Glad that he's eating and drinking. Do you have foods like melon in? it's really watery so it keeps their fluids up. Ice lollies made from fruit juice are good too. I think DVDs are your friend while your DH is away and you are coping with a sick boy!

EmmaRoyd · 21/09/2011 11:53

Still shaking and being sick, took him to walk in clinic yesterday where he was sick again and went a bit yellow, temp hit 40. Saw 2 docs, one was concerned but the more senior one wasn't. Good idea about the lollies, will try that but he doesn't seem interested in anything at all.

Ice lollies and drinks with straws.
I find cola with ice cubes in and a straw can often get them drinking when not feeling up to it. Had the advantage put dd1 off cola for the next few years too. She still doesn't like it. Grin
You can also limit the amount of drink they take in with a straw if they're gulping too much and then bringing it straight back.

FiniteIncantatem · 21/09/2011 13:02

The otherThing that you can do is give him a bath in tepid (cool, not cold) water. It will help to lower his temp if it is still high.

larrygrylls · 21/09/2011 13:29

If your 12 month old has had a sustained temperature above 39, vomiting and rigor, then he needs to be properly examined, ideally by a paediatrician. I would take him to A&E in your position. I'm not sure what you meant by "turning yellow" either..

beautifulgirls · 21/09/2011 23:30

Cold hands whilst suffering from a high temperature, and vomiting - please take the time to read www.meningitis.org/symptoms or better still just take him to the local hospital asap. Without wishing to scare you we nearly lost DD#3 a few months ago. She was seen twice by doctors before I took her to A&E when they finally reconised the severity of her illness and she was rushed into intensive care.

EmmaRoyd · 22/09/2011 15:02

Larrygryls his skin had a yellowish tinge especially his feet, nose and the back of his neck. Have taken him to A&e as his temp hit 40.7, he has had urine test which didn't show an infection. They weren't concerned about his colour as his eyes were white. They advised to keep giving calpol and neurofen. Thanks for all the advice everyone. Next time I will go to A&E sooner.

Is he on any antibiotics at all? I am glad you took him but would not hesitate to keep pushing them if he does not get a lot better in the next day or two.

EmmaRoyd · 22/09/2011 18:08

No antibiotics, they just keep saying give calpol.

Thanks for the meningitis info. I asked about having a high temp and cold hands (which he has right now BTW) and they said it's just the blood going to other parts of the body to fight the infection.

Hi Emma, sorry to hear he's still so poorly. If his temp is still up tomorrow I think I would take him back again. I know that's probably not what you want to hear with all your to and fro-ing but by then it will have been 3 days with a fever and I would want to be seen again before the weekend in case it is something that will need antibs. Although if they didn't see anything today then I guess it's unlikely that much will have changed by tomorrow. Confused

I hope you're taking care of yourself too. It can be very draining looking after them when they are sick. Especially with a toddler and your husband being away!

beautifulgirls · 22/09/2011 21:45

I would take him back and push the issue here, this doesn't sound right. That temp is significantly high and a urine test does not rule out other serious issues. Sorry but cold hands and feet with a fever should be ringing alarm bells to them. At least insist on blood testing if you go back so they can rule out anything more serious.

EmmaRoyd · 22/09/2011 22:00

DH is back and DD gone to stay with MIL for a couple of days. Yes I will take him back tomorrow if he doesn't show any improvement. Thanks everyone I really appreciate your advice.

beautifulgirls · 22/09/2011 22:29

If his hands and feet are still cold now and his temp is up please take him tonight. If all is well then nothing lost, if this is more serious tomorrow could be too late.

larrygrylls · 23/09/2011 09:10

The thing I don't understand is in the case of serious illness (and, to me, a temp of over 105 in fahrenheit is serious) they tend to give covering antibiotics just in case there is infection. They need to do blood as well as urine and even CSF, if there are any indications of problems in that area.

Aside from the very high fever, what other symptoms does he have? Is he still drinking something?

MrsBlarney · 23/09/2011 09:26

I would at this stage put money on tonsilitis - or possibly some other kind of infection which would require antibiotics.

They're always missing it. Please please take him to be seen today if he is still hot.

MrsBlarney · 23/09/2011 09:27

fwiw mine always get very cold extremities with a high fever. But BG is right too, it's very high, he's clearly not well, they need to investigate further.

EmmaRoyd · 23/09/2011 09:30

In A&E now, DS seemed relatively ok in the night but woke up with temp of 41.6, tested thermometer in my ear and it read 37. Have given calpol and the walk here in the cool air has cooled him right down. Just waiting to be seen.

OP posts:
MrsBlarney · 23/09/2011 09:33

Yikes, that's a hefty spike.

Really hope they take it a bit more seriously this time and DO something for the poor wee chap.

Well done for taking him back. Let us know x

EmmaRoyd · 23/09/2011 09:33

Sorry I meant to say he is drinking water and has nibbled on a rice cake and breadsticks and a small bite of banana yesterday. What is CSF?
