DD can't see a GP until Friday but she is on pain now. Any suggestions for how I can help her would be great, thank you.

She doesn't want Calpol.
She is 8.
Her vagina is stinging, sometimes when weeing sometimes for no apparent reason.
Urine sample has come back fine.
Have tried a warm flannel on it.
She was checked by a GP 9 days ago and he didn't se anything untoward.

No fancy loo roll.

I have no experience of threadworms. What am I looking for and where exactly?

dd has had this on her 8th birthday and was in agony. doctor said big no to Sudocream, but an ok to Canesten. In the end dd couldn't bear for me to put Canesten on (all tests had come back clear for thrush, bladder). I still have no idea what it was, the only thing was that she wore some leggings out of the packet, when i normally wash stuff first, but it was her birthday and they were a gift.

It happened just before a big hormone surge too, thats the only thing i can remember. It went in about 4 days.

MmeLindor. · 13/09/2011 21:37

It is also worse when DD wears tight jeans.

TheOriginalFAB · 13/09/2011 21:40

DD won't wear jeans and only wears skirts or leggings as she won't wear anything with a button on. Off to bed now, thanks for all the ideas.

Lichen sclerosis is often missed or misdiagnosed, but can have very negative consequences if it continues into adulthood. Hydrocortisone is the treatment. You could mention LS to your GP / whoever you see, just in case.

PootlePosyPerkin · 13/09/2011 21:47

I was a Receptionist at a GP Surgery for several years. If you, the patient, say that you need to be seen on the same day then you have to be seen on the same day. It's the law. No Receptionist can refuse your request - they cannot see you & even if they could, they are not qualified to tell you your problem/illness is not urgent enough. This is also the law.

You would have to go when the GP wants you to though - you cannot call it an emergency & then say "but I can only make it after 5.30pm etc.". The GP's view on that would be that it is not a true emergency if you are well enough to attend work/school/other appointments as a priority over your medical emergency.

It may also be that your surgery is one which keeps a certain number of routine appointments to be "released" on the same day, aswell as their emergency ones. There are certain government guidelines about how long people should be kept waiting to see their GP's & releasing some appointments on the day can help to make it look like the practice is complying with those guidelines.

Either way, you cannot be refused the right to see a GP tomorrow if you/your DC needs to. Hope you get it resolved soon Smile.

Sorry, clicked post by accident.

They can migrate from anus to vagina and cause a lot of distress. But the medication is available OTC, so if it is threadworm you can treat it tomorrow without delay. Please do check her (you have to do it while she is asleep because as soonas the person gets up and moves around the worms dash back inside and cannot be seen) because the medication gives such relief.

I flinch at the distress it caused my dd, and it makes me quite cross when people yammer on about how it is unnecessary to use medication to treat threadworm - they haven't sat up with a child weeping with vaginal pain Sad.

Canesten is soothing and is safe to use on tiny babies, so would be fine for her.

PrettyCandles · 13/09/2011 21:54

You take a torch, go quietly into her bedroom so as not to disturb her, switch the torch on, then part her buttocks and shine the tor h on her anus. It's easiest if she is lying on her side, knees tucked up a bit. You can position her. The threadworms look like little pieces of white thread up to about 1cm long. They are sometimes found standing on one end and waving in the air. It's unmistakeable.

TheOriginalFAB · 14/09/2011 08:15

Thank you all, I didn't check her last night as she wasn't fully asleep and she was upset when the doctor checked her so I didn't want to upset her further. She has said she has tummy ache and feels sick this morning so I am going to ring the doctor now.

I got a doctors appointment for dd this morning but didn't actually see the GP until 1 1/2 hours after her appointment time. Bit stressed and DD was tired. He told me that her urine had crystals in it so she needs to drink more water and I did question why I wasn't told this. He said it had no bearing on the fact she has stinging at times other than when weeing. He took a swab which was really difficult for her and me but it has been done and the results will be back on Monday. I have to put sellotape on her anus tonight to see if she has threadworms. Poor little thing. I feel so crap and have failed her as she has been complaining for 2 weeks at least now.

It is a common thing with girls and can be caused by not wiping from front to back, or not wiping properly. Sudocrem or Metanium can really help. Shower rather than bathe too with a soap free wash. This sorted things for my daughter.

TheOriginalFAB · 14/09/2011 12:07

She does wipe properly from front to back and mostly has showers. I don't really used bubble bath with them and if I do it is natural. It is so hard to see her in such discomfort.

FAB if DD won't take Calpol for the pain/discomfort, have you tried some generic own-brand type paracetamol? I've never bought proper Calpol (too tight!) but mine happily take own-brand ones which don't appear to taste too sweet or sickly.

My 5 year old DD has been complaining of similar this week - urine sample was fine too. She's been wanting to go to the toilet quite often in school and clutching at her crotch but I've not been able to get her to confirm if she's itchy or sore as she changes her mind and can be lead if the question is too specific. I may try her with a bit of metanium tonight and see how we go. Hope you'll be able to update if you get any joy.

TheOriginalFAB · 14/09/2011 19:21

I have always bought Calpol but I will bear it in mind. I didn't even know you could get own brand paracetomol. Thanks.

Fab
It sounds incredibly similar to what troubles my DD.

I started a thread a couple of months ago. I think that when they do not drink enough, the urine becomes too concentrated and it stings when they pee.

It definitely helps DD when she drinks lots. She takes a bottle of water into school, as she drinks less at school than at home.

We didn't have it at all over the holidays, but the first week back at school she was crying in the night.

Best relief for her is sitting in a warm bath. And drinking lots of water to dilute the urine.

TheOriginalFAB · 15/09/2011 08:10

Thank you.

Nothing on the tape but we will do it again tonight as it came off so we are not sure there was time for it to do its job.

I have reminded DD she has to drink more.

FAB - I gave my calpol hater Panadol at that age. Soluble paracetamol

TheOriginalFAB · 15/09/2011 11:10

I will investigate that, thank you.

Tests back negative so receptionist said she was fine.

She clearly isn't but can't see a doctor for 11 days.

FFS.
I will just have to phone in the morning and take her out of school again.

OP posts:
PrettyCandles · 19/09/2011 18:36

How do you do the tape?

TheOriginalFAB · 19/09/2011 18:48

Just put it on the anus.

Got a cancellation so will be seen this week.

OP posts:
Fayrazzled · 19/09/2011 19:03

Don't bother with the sellotape- that sounds really uncomfortable. Do as another poster said and examine your daughter's bottom once she is asleep during the night, using a touch if necessary. My two have both had threadworms and they were visible (unmistakably so) doing this.

Good luck. It must be very distressing for you both not to have an answer.

PrettyCandles · 19/09/2011 19:49

I agree, don't bother with the tape. It can't be comfortable, and if she's wriggling and squirming any worms are less likely to come out, as the sufferer's movement causes them to hide inside.

Please check her with a torch while she's asleep. Just about everything you describe points to a severe threadworm infestation, and it is so easy to clear up.

And, very importantly, if your dd does have threadworms, you must treat the whole family, whether or not they have any signs of threadworm. It's very infectious.

TheOriginalFAB · 19/09/2011 19:52

If we check and can't see anything should we get some stuff to treat her anyway?

OP posts:
Lougle · 19/09/2011 19:56

Fab, sorry but this is simply ridiculous!

Do you know, it really doesn't matter if it's threadworm or not. If she has threadworm, treating it will help. If she doesn't have threadworm, treating it won't hurt.

Why don't you just go to your chemist, buy the threadworm treatment and see if she gets better?

If she gets better, no problem. If not, she will still have her appointment.
