DD can't see a GP until Friday but she is on pain now. Any suggestions for how I can help her would be great, thank you.

She doesn't want Calpol.
She is 8.
Her vagina is stinging, sometimes when weeing sometimes for no apparent reason.
Urine sample has come back fine.
Have tried a warm flannel on it.
She was checked by a GP 9 days ago and he didn't se anything untoward.

And how about those calpol/nurofen melts. Like thin tablets that melt in their mouth.

culturemulcher · 13/09/2011 21:02

My 6yo DD complained of something similar over the holidays. We tried calpol and even canesten, but it didn't seem to work.

After a few days it clicked - she'd been wearing jeans for a week (jeans, capri trousers, shorts, but all cut in a 'jeans-ish' style IYSWIM), and I think she was just rubbed sore, poor thing. A few days in skirts and dresses and bingo - all back to normal.

Has your DD started wearing trousers now she's back at school? Is there a seam that rubs? (Or perhaps she's been rubbing herself a little too hard?)

Pinner35 · 13/09/2011 21:03

Have you tried giving her cranberry juice (if it is cystitis). During one bout, I drank a litre and it cleared up pretty quickly. Might be worth a shot....

culturemulcher · 13/09/2011 21:03

*sorry, we tried Sudocrem, not calpol

KittyWalker · 13/09/2011 21:03

DD hasn't complained of this for ages now and she's also decided she prefers to shower rather than have a bath (usually with bubbles), I wonder if it's linked?

TheOriginalFAB · 13/09/2011 21:05

She only wears skirts.
Always use Fairy and have done for years.
No new knickers.
She isn't in constant pain and it isn't every day. Makes it hard to know what it is.

I aggree she should be seen sooner fab.
The canesten will be ok too but id steer clear of sudocrem as a bit harsh.
Would she take a tablet? My dd hates calpol but can manage a tablet.
If you give me her weight i can look up in bnf what the dose should be.
DD is 9 and about 4 stones and she has a whole one.
She could wee whilst sat in the bath if really difficult.

culturemulcher · 13/09/2011 21:08

Please don't use savlon or germolene, btw - ouch!

PromiseFalls · 13/09/2011 21:11

Has she tried the fastmelt calpol tablets or ibuprofen, although I'm not sure how much they would help if it's thrush.

If she's still awake now or wakes in the night and is sore I think I'd try a bit of sudocrem since you have it there.

Is there chance of an emergency appointment if you phone in the morning, I think this would certainly count as urgent. I would get some canesten if no chance of an appointment.

MigratingCoconuts · 13/09/2011 21:11

My DD had a similar set of symptoms. She described pain, calpol didn't work and there seemed to be no link to weeing and no obvious odour. She was 5 and just did not have the experience to be able to explain clearly what was happening but i know that it was very sore.

We took her to the doctor who said it was an exchema like irritation and perscribed the same cream that my DS has for his. It cleared up very quickly and we have had very little re-occurance. When it does, we just get her to slap on the cream!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 13/09/2011 21:12

Have you checked to see if she has threadworms? DD gets them occasionally and she doesn't itch as you'd expect, she gets pain around her vulva instead (iirc when the worms come out at night, they can get 'lost' and cause irritation)

Failing that I'd third (or fourth) the suggestion to try some Canesten - can't hurt, and often helps.

Hope she feels better soon.

Arion · 13/09/2011 21:13

Does she have an itch? Could she be rubbing too hard with toilet paper? I got in a bit of a viscious cycle in feeling like a thrush itch (for about a year!) so rubbing too hard with toilet paper which then made it sting when I urinated, then it would heal, then itch a bit again, then I'd rub, then it would sting, repeat, repeat! I even had a skin biopsy for Lichen sclerosis (negative). I think mine was stress related, still get it occasionally when stressed about something.

The stinging when I urinated was similar to the stinging you get with the first 24 hours after childbirth when you go to the toilet so you can inflict quite a bit of damage just by rubbing too hard with toilet paper!

Sorry if tmi! Blush Hope she feels better soon!

PromiseFalls · 13/09/2011 21:13

Sorry missed that ibuprofen makes her sick.

TheOriginalFAB · 13/09/2011 21:16

I have told her to dab herself dry and she said she does. DH has also bought some different loo roll and she is sleeping without knickers.
I feel uncomfortable looking inside as I don't know what I am looking for.

You will have an out of hours doctor in your area, you should be able to get their number from your surgeries answer machine as soon as they are closed...
Failing that, ring as soon as they are open in the morning and demand an emergency appt, they shouldn't refuse for a child that is in pain.
Good luck

culturemulcher · 13/09/2011 21:23

It's good to know lots of other MNers have faced this situation. When my DD had this I think she found the fact that it was her vulva that was in pain, rather than an arm or leg, really upsetting.

TheOriginalFAB · 13/09/2011 21:23

The nurse said it was the first appointment they had but I will ring tomorrow as it really isn't fair for DD.

Sidge · 13/09/2011 21:26

Could be fungal - Canesten (clotrimazole) is quite safe to use and won't cause any harm even if it isn't fungal.

If she's still in pain in the morning phone the surgery back and ask for a same-day appointment. She may need a vaginal swab to check for bacterial or fungal infection, or maybe some low-strength hydrocortisone.

PuppyMonkey · 13/09/2011 21:28

Just out of interest, you haven't been using that toilet roll with aloe vera have you? It set me off on a whole load of allergic symptoms last year down there.

PrettyCandles · 13/09/2011 21:29

Have you checked her for threadworm? Dd had exactly what you describe, and no other symptoms. Apparently they can migrate frCheck her bottom tonight by torchlight while she's asleep.

PuppyMonkey · 13/09/2011 21:30

Yes, my doc said put hydrocortisone on . I was like this Shock and Hmm but she was adamant.

3littlefrogs · 13/09/2011 21:31

Sit in a warm bath

Hot water bottle on tummy

Cranberry juice and loads of water to drink

Check and treat for threadworms.

Canesten can sting like mad, so I would not reccommend it unless you are sure it is thrush.

Try crushing the appropriate dose of paracetamol in some yogurt or similar.

(Thread worms are often only visible at night, so you need to go on torch patrol).

HTH

3littlefrogs · 13/09/2011 21:33

Xposted with Pretty Candles. (You can tell which of us have had long experience of threadworms....)

LuzLuz · 13/09/2011 21:33

We've had this too - thought it was just me. DD goes crazy when it happens - v upsetting. Dr said it was an excema like flare up on vulva v common in girls. She recommended sudocrem. I have to be careful about what soaps/bubble baths etc she uses. Stick to E45 wash now.

MmeLindor. · 13/09/2011 21:36

DD has had this too. She is 9yo.

It seems to be worse when she has not drunk much water - when it is especially warm.

Always worse when she is in school as she does not drink enough.
