Starting school tommorow- and today temp of 102 with aches, argh!

What to do? DS is 4, and its his first (half) day at school tommorow. He is in first staggered batch as he is one of the youngest, and is a bit apprehensive.

But since 2pm today he has been headachey, sore throat, aches, and temp now at 102 degrees.

I know school dont like kids to be off- and I wouldnt choose him to be off just when school starts tbh! But I dont want to send him in like this!

What do I do? Bad timing! Argh!

I wouldn't send him in if he is the same tomorrow. He will be so upset. But they do bounce back quickly, if he has a good night and seems ok in the morning, you may be able to.

Hope he's okay - mine starts this week too Sad

ouch Sad. Don't send him. 102 is really high. Let him get better so he can go in with lots of energy in a few days.

Agree that nobody will remember in a fortnight. Let him rest - phone the school before drop off time and tell them that you think he may have flu/similar. There is already a lot of flu around and I promise you school will be happier that he has missed a few days rather than given a horrid illness to the entire class and the poor teacher.

My teacher brother is missing the first day of term tomorrow due to flu.

Thank you all- I'll see how he is tommorow- cant belive the bad timing here!

I'm really hoping he will be better in morning and can go in, but I'm glad people think its ok if I keep him home- didnt want to mark his card at school so early IYSWIM?

He never had a single day off sick at nursery- hows your luck eh...

Does any of the bumf from the school tell you what you need to do for a sickness absence? It's common to be asked to phone in by a certain time, so the child's whereabouts are known (and you'll probably need to send a note or fill in a standard form giving the reason on return).

I would be desperate to start my DC at school on the proper first day - but can say now (with the blessing of hindsight, and older children) that missing the first day does not matter at all in the long run, and it is generally better to keep them at home until their temperature has been normal for 24 hours.

Update- temp was normal this morning so dosed him up & sent him in- its only half days this week- off to pick him up soon. Hope it went ok!

Hope he had a nice time. Just a word of warning:

If you mean you gave him calpol before he went, be warned that some schools (mine included) will give children calpol without phoning in advance. I did sign a permission slip somewhere for them to do this but it would be an easy thing to forget and then they might have too much calpol.

Glad he made it. Ds missed all of lAst week (3rd wk @ school) its better to keep them off if they're ill.
